Christmas on Sylt

Anticipation is the greatest joy

The cold season on Sylt is so wonderful

Yes, is it Christmas again already? Not quite yet – fortunately! Because that would be one of the most beautiful seasons is already over, including all the anticipation of Advent. You can enjoy this special atmosphere as you browse for personalized gifts, sample the variety of Christmas cookies, or experience the pre-Christmas program while the North Sea offers its wild spectacle outside.

Be sure to stroll through one of the Christmas markets on the island! Traditional crafts, delicious homemade punch, and special moments from Burgundy roast to kale soup await you there.

December on Sylt

December may not always bring the gentle trickling of snow, but when golden lights sparkle on thatched roofs everywhere, it's just as magical. And that's without the dark pine forest.

Instead, between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day, you can watch brave Santas run into the North Sea. We recommend fur boots for the beach party! When you'll fall asleep is best decided spontaneously. But you can already decide where. Book your session

A few tips for Nightlife and Returning home we have prepared for you.

Silter
Christmas traditions

Between North Sea wind, glittering lights and island customs

The Christmas season on Sylt is full of special moments and unique traditions. Three of them are an integral part of the island's winter:

At the Christmas bathing Every year, brave souls venture into the cold North Sea. Quite different, but just as typically Nordic, is the Jöölboom, the Frisian Christmas tree. Instead of fir branches, a wooden frame, branches, and salt dough figures decorate this symbol of old island life.

And when doors and windows open in December, the living Advent calendar throughout the island to cozy get-togethers with music, punch and lights.

Well, five degrees is enough for swimming fun!

The air and water temperatures aren't really changing at five degrees Celsius, but stepping into the cool water is still a special moment – and it's best done quickly, otherwise the temptation to skip it is great. That's exactly what the annual Westerland Christmas swim is all about: a real sprint into the North Sea! Santa Clauses and "Adams and Eves" alike bravely run into the waves. A total of around 150 brave people venture into the water.

Want to join in? Registration opens the same day from 13 p.m. in front of the Galerie am Meer on the promenade. Or would you rather enjoy the spectacle wrapped up warm with a glass of punch in hand? Then be there on time and support the brave swimmers with a big round of applause! The starting gun will fire at 14:30 p.m., and the Sylt Shanty Choir will provide musical accompaniment in the bandstand from 14:45 p.m.

The Sylt Jöölboom

A stroll through the wintry streets and alleys of the island's towns becomes an evening festival of lights, as in the run-up to Christmas the small and large lights in the gardens compete with the Jöölboom, which can be found in so many Sylt windows and upholds a tradition that once began with deprivation and has become a symbol of Frisian ingenuity.

From emergency solution to cult object

They're a smart bunch, the Sylt Frisians. Shortages of any kind usually never become a problem, because the solution is usually readily available. This was also the case with the traditional Christmas tree boom. Without the car train and modern infrastructure, Christmas trees were a true rarity around the year 1800, neither common nor common. And so necessity was the mother of invention.

  • This year, the cultural committee of the Sölring Foriining eV is once again offering a wreath-making event for the Jöölboom at the Sylt Museum. Here you can find the dates!

Since the people of Sylt are hospitable islanders and like to get a little closer together in the winter, with each other and with all those who love Sylt beyond the summer days, it was only a matter of time before the custom of Living Advent Calendar found his place on the island.

This year, the doors will be opened at three locations on Sylt: private homes, the fire department, the bakery, and the hotel. True to the motto “Lift up the door, open the gate wide”, no matter how big the doors or the rooms behind them are.
Whether behind each door The smell of cookies, mulled wine, singing together or an instrumental solo remains a loving surprise – just like the little Advent calendar at home.
