The cold season on Sylt is so wonderful

Yes, is it Christmas already? Not quite yet – thankfully! Because that would mean one of the most wonderful times of the year would already be over, including all the anticipation of Advent. You can enjoy this special atmosphere as you browse for personalized gifts, sample the variety of Christmas cookies, or experience the pre-Christmas activities while the North Sea offers its wild spectacle outside. Be sure to stroll through one of the island's Christmas markets! There, traditional crafts, delicious homemade punch, and special moments from Burgundy roast to kale soup await you.

December on Sylt

December may not always bring the gentle trickling of snow, but when golden lights sparkle on the thatched roofs everywhere, it's just as magical – without the dark pine forest. Instead, between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day, you can watch brave Santas run into the North Sea. We recommend fur boots for the beach party! It's best to decide spontaneously when you'll fall asleep – but you can book the "where" now. We've prepared a few tips for going out and coming home for you.

Christmas competition: Win the Sylt Monopoly game and a 50-euro Inselzeit voucher!

In just XNUMX steps:

1. Design a beautiful Christmas card (craft, write - the main thing is to be creative!)
2. Send them to us from December 1.12.24st to the 4th Advent (December 22.12.24nd) to the following address: Sylt Marketing, Stephanstraße 6, 25980 Sylt
3. Important: Don't forget your Instagram or Facebook name, otherwise we won't be able to reach you!
4. Follow us on Instagram (sylt_die_insel) to be there.

Schedule:
Every day we select the card of the day and feature it in our Instagram story. On Advent Sundays (December 08, 15, and 22.12.24, XNUMX), you can choose the most beautiful card of the week.
Finale: On December 24.12.24, XNUMX, you decide who wins the prize!

We're excited to see your creative masterpieces - get your cards ready and good luck!

Well, five degrees is enough for swimming fun!

The air and water temperatures aren't really changing at five degrees Celsius, but stepping into the cool water is still a special moment – and it's best done quickly, otherwise the temptation to skip it is great. That's exactly what the annual Westerland Christmas swim is all about: a real sprint into the North Sea! Santa Clauses and "Adams and Eves" alike bravely run into the waves. A total of around 150 brave people venture into the water.

Want to join in? Registration opens the same day from 13 p.m. in front of the Galerie am Meer on the promenade. Or would you rather enjoy the spectacle wrapped up warm with a glass of punch in hand? Then be there on time and support the brave swimmers with a big round of applause! The starting gun will fire at 14:30 p.m., and the Sylt Shanty Choir will provide musical accompaniment in the bandstand from 14:45 p.m.

Churches throughout the island offer a varied concert program. The Wednesday concerts at Keitum's St. Severin Church are particularly popular.

Here, you're guaranteed to be musically in tune with the holidays and the New Year. And those seeking peace amidst the festive season can immerse themselves in the tranquility of Advent services and evening blessings in the island's churches.

More alive
Advent Calendar

in Morsum

Since the people of Sylt are a hospitable island people and like to get closer together, especially in winter – among themselves and with everyone who loves Sylt even beyond the summer days – it was inevitable that the tradition of the Living Advent Calendar would find favor on the island.

Places and times for pre-Christmas meetings

Advent evenings all begin at 18 p.m. The end date is usually open, as is the number of attendees. There's room in the smallest hut if you squeeze together a bit. It's more comfortable anyway. And if you get chatting after the music and Advent story, who wants to set a time limit?

When and where is the Living Advent Calendar?

And so every day from the first to the 23rd of December the doors in Morsum. To private homes, the fire department, the bakery, the hotel... True to the motto "Lift up the door, open the gate wide," no matter how big the doors or the rooms behind them are. And whether cookies or mulled wine, a group singing session, or an instrumental solo are hidden behind the door, it's just as much of a surprise as the little sweet calendar at home.

The Sylt Jöölboom

Frisian Christmas tradition

A stroll through the wintry streets and alleys of the island's towns becomes an evening festival of lights, as in the run-up to Christmas the small and large lights in the gardens compete with the Jöölboom, which can be found in so many Sylt windows and upholds a tradition that once began with deprivation and has become a symbol of Frisian ingenuity.

The Jöölboom: From emergency tool to cult object

They're a smart bunch, the Sylt Frisians. Shortages of any kind usually never become a problem, because the solution is usually readily available. This was also the case with the traditional Christmas tree boom. Without the car train and modern infrastructure, Christmas trees were a true rarity around the year 1800, neither common nor common. And so necessity was the mother of invention.

A Sylt Christmas classic –
the cinnamon stars from the Abeling bakery

© Abeling Bakery

Is it because of the first-class marzipan?
In loving hands that shape each one individually?

The cinnamon stars of the 1886 founded Sylt's traditional bakery Abeling (Maybachstraße 15, Westerland) delight gourmets throughout Europe.

Centimeter-thick, melt-in-the-mouth and topped with icing, the stars, which weigh around 40 grams, are handcrafted every winter.

These patented cinnamon stars are not only a treat, but also a piece of Sylt’s history.

Baked with love, they bring the taste of the island directly to your home – shipped throughout Germany and always a special highlight, especially at Christmas time.
