Sylt Storm Week 2025
New exciting nature and cultural experiences, workshops, sauna steam, adventures for the heart and soul and much more can be seen and enjoyed on Sylt during the third edition of the Sylt Storm Week from January 18 to 26, 2025.
Stormy times and powerful winds are constant components of our island life. They accompany us day and night, throughout the season and every season. The Sylt landscape sometimes truly comes alive during these harsh storms. But they also make it very vulnerable and fragile. When the North Sea once again rages at our beaches, grabbing a piece of the edge, it feels like it's taking its toll on us too. Knowing that even the strongest hurricane has an end, the immense power is fascinating.
It's precisely this magical and raw energy that we want to honor and truly absorb with Sylt's Storm Week. With inspiring readings and special events in extraordinary spaces and hidden corners, featuring expert knowledge, adventure stories, and films. There will also be a light art performance, an after-work concert, and soothing moments in the beach sauna.
No month would be more appropriate than January! Sounds like a rollercoaster of emotions? Then find out more in our Program.

Klappholttal mini writing retreat with a view
When the soul seeks peace in stormy times, writing and creative activity can ground and inspire. The Academy by the Sea invites interested adults to take a short writing retreat during Storm Week.
With writing workshop instructor Dorothée Gommen-Hingst, we offer a mini-retreat with mindfulness impulses, writing prompts, and plenty of free space for writing - loosely based on Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" - for a few hours: for thinking, pausing, reflecting, and being creative.
After a group introduction and creative writing prompts, participants will have their own writing rooms with a view, where they can retreat for their own personal writing break. Coffee, tea, and pastries will sweeten the break. With mindfulness prompts, we'll clear our heads with a short walk on the beach before returning to the writing locations and diving back into writing in the second part after further writing prompts. A final group session will provide an opportunity to discuss the mini writing retreat.
During the quiet seminar-free time at the Academy by the Sea, participants can gain a brief insight into the educational program and the Klappholttal site and facilities.

Drive out when others come in
While others seek the protection of a safe harbor during storms and hurricanes, they still set sail whenever someone is in distress at sea. The sea rescuers at the northernmost station of the German Sea Rescue Association (DGzRS) invite you to tour the sea rescue cruiser PIDDER LÜNG! Learn firsthand about the work of the sea rescuers at the "Open Ship" event and chat with the crew in List!
The DGzRS is responsible for search and rescue services in the North and Baltic Seas. More than 1.000 sea rescuers from 60 rescue units are deployed around 2.000 times a year – around the clock, in all weather conditions, and financed exclusively through voluntary donations. Since its founding in 1865, the DGzRS has rescued or extricated more than 86.000 people from distress at sea. The List Sea Rescuers' territory is characterized by the open North Sea to the west, strong tidal currents, high tidal range, and the extensive mudflats in the east of the island, as well as between Sylt and its neighboring Danish island of Rømø. This area is particularly challenging in strong winds.
The following applies to the visit: Operations and emergency services always take priority. When visiting our station, please always expect that a unit may not be available at the specified time.

Thomas Bickhardt
According to the old Beaufort scale, wind force 15 is real. Thomas Bickhardt, a former lighthouse keeper, sailor, storm photographer, and maritime psychologist, has experienced it. He reads from his new book "Wind Force 15" and shows pictures from his life on the rugged coast of western Norway. Thomas Bickhardt's longing for Norway drove him from an early age. In his early 30s, he realized his dream and leased a lighthouse on a steep cliff, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
Against all odds, he operated this lighthouse for 25 years. He lived amidst unique natural surroundings, close to the sea. In addition to his work as a storm photographer and maritime psychologist, he started a family.
But huge waves, hurricanes far beyond force 12, bureaucracy, and xenophobia are also part of his new everyday life. In a gripping illustrated reading, Thomas transports us into this harsh world with his direct and humorous language and striking images.
Basswald & Glade
As a Basswald & Glade create Katrin Bethge (overhead projections) and John Eckhardt (turntables) create audiovisual situations in which they playfully balance composition and self-organizing processes. Using light-refracting objects, liquids, and everyday materials directly on the surface of the projector, Katrin Bethge creates cosmic and microscopic spaces of light. John Eckhardt's contemplative DJ sets create spectral soundscapes pulsating with massive bass, interweaving into surprising narratives.
With these simple means, Basswald & Lichtung draw their audience into an archaic, synesthetic adventure. In a shared, organic movement forward through time, moments of trance and contemplation repeatedly arise. Katrin Bethge and John Eckhardt have refined their very own style of interaction and their holistic mutual understanding over years of close collaboration and numerous performances – high-resolution and multidimensional, yet simultaneously fragile and magical...
Katrin Bethge transforms the surfaces of spaces with her ephemeral overhead projections and accompanies dance, theater, and music projects on international stages, including in Switzerland, Poland, Finland, and the USA. She staged the first Sparkling Concert with Ensemble Resonanz at the Elbphilharmonie, and her light installations for the 500th birthday of Martin Luther at Schleswig Cathedral attracted 9.000 visitors. Her permanent installation "Praeludium Lux" can be seen in Schwerin Castle. Most recently, she projected the world premiere of the musical theater piece "Schattengold" at the Konzerthaus Berlin.
John Eckhardt As a bassist and DJ, he explores contemporary music, creating a deep-frequency soundscape. He has participated in over 40 recordings and released his sixth solo album in 2024. Deutschlandfunk dedicated the show "Basswald" to him, which has also become a successful podcast with 30 episodes. In addition to music, he is intensively involved with photography, which he combines with his musical work in special art projects.

sewing workshop
Located right on the promenade, with the surf crashing in front of you, is Westerland's winter living room. Here, where sun worshippers and surfers usually enjoy the summer, creative tranquility and Nordic coziness now reign: time for the sewing workshop as part of the SMG event series "Sylt Storm Week."
The workshop invites participants to experience the rugged heritage of the sea in a new way. Piles of fabrics and materials are stacked before the participants, including storm-scarred fragments of the legendary Sylt beach chairs. These blue, white, and sand-colored symbols of beach life, shaped by the North Sea wind, are now to find a new form. Participants sit in the cozy winter living room and work on their projects. The clatter of sewing machines mingles with the sound of the surf, while the winter blues dissipate.
Under the guidance of experienced craftsman Andi, participants create bags, wine coolers, and unique souvenirs—each piece a tribute to the wild North Sea. While sewing and crafting, participants create engaging conversations and new memories.
The "Sylt Storm Week" in the Winter Living Room is more than a workshop—it's an experience. At the end of the day, participants go home not only with a handmade souvenir, but also with inspiring memories.
