Sylt is

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve on Sylt

Experience the New Year on the North Sea island.

On New Year's Eve you can first sweat at the New Year's Eve run on the island and then at the big Open-air New Year's Eve party in Westerland to dance and celebrate in the New Year. A good atmosphere will certainly prevail during the official fireworks display at Hörnum harbor, where January 1st is welcomed with a sparkling sky. Sylt's beach parties know no seasonal boundaries.

This is how the new year starts on Sylt
And the beginning of the year is already packed with a variety of events that leave no room for boredom. The Wenningstedt bathing season? Starts on January 1st. Only the length of stay in the North Sea is limited during the traditional New Year's bathing a little shorter than in summer. The North Sea offers a cozy 6 degrees Celsius for the truly intrepid.

Open Air New Year's Eve Party

on the promenade in Westerland

Instead of firecrackers, corks pop, a starry sky replaces the roof of a hall, and DJ beats mingle with the sound of the sea: When Westerland celebrates New Year's Eve, thousands of revelers are on their feet. Mostly dancing – you can do that on the sand, but maybe not barefoot at this time of year. Although... we don't know how hardy you are. On Sylt, it's beach party season year-round. The crashing North Sea, cool music with the best hits from the charts and popular house and dance classics – that's how New Year's Eve is celebrated in Westerland. Whether you make it to one of the clubs afterward is up to you.

Sylt Easter

This is how a New Year's celebration should look.

It all starts in the center of Wenningstedt at Kapellenplatz. The popular event takes place there from 16 pm to 20 pm. New Year's Eve for the little ones Instead – thanks to a fire bowl, campfire bread, a fire show by the Varieté Salon Sylt and sparkling sparklers, little eyes will widen in wonder. Admission is free.

From 22 pm onwards, things really get going for the adults! The hall at the cliff opens its doors to
Sylt New Year's Eve Party with DJ Sascha Balkenhol, two indoor bars and a spectacular laser show
at the main staircase. Furthermore, thanks to the catering from one of the
Wintertreff huts are closed for drinks until 01:30 a.m. Tickets are available in advance and

New Year's Eve bubbles

in Kampen

High on the list of nice little Sylt traditions is the New Year's Eve blowing in Kampen. People meet around 18:45 p.m. with his collar turned up, perhaps after the last walk of the year, at Kaamp-Hüs. Outside, the brass players of the Norddörfer Music Association are gathering, giving a little concert celebrating everything that has been and everything that may come, and sounding the bell for the year that is about to end.

The mayor traditionally gives a short speech. The municipality serves mulled wine, and the amount of hot beverage consumed determines how long the event will last—usually just under an hour.

On the island of Sylt there is a year-round ban on setting off fireworks

This also applies on December 31st and January 1st, when New Year's Eve firecrackers are set off elsewhere. The reason for this ban is, among other things, to protect the numerous thatched buildings, for which the fireworks pose a significant fire risk. Due to the constant wind, the ban also applies outside of towns and beaches, as there are numerous buildings here, often invisible at first glance, that must be protected from burning rockets.

By voluntarily refraining from the sale of rockets, fountains, and firecrackers classified as Class II, III, and IV, Sylt's retailers are supporting the ban on fireworks. In addition, officials from various authorities and organizations are appealing to residents and guests to refrain from bringing fireworks with them, thus making a valuable contribution to the agreed-upon approach.

To this day, on New Year's Eve, the doors are opened to the Rummelpottläufer (runners), who parade through the island's villages wearing wild makeup and costumes, singing songs. This honors a special begging tradition and keeps it alive. You can also look forward to graphic works by the artist Willem Grimm, who explored the theme of masking and the Rummelpottlaufen (masquerade run) throughout his career.
