The classic among Sylt hikes - once along the beach around the southern tip of the island with a view of the neighboring islands of Amrum and Föhr.

Even though Hörnum Odde has lost some area in recent years, the hike around its southern tip remains a highlight. The starting and ending point is Hörnum harbor with its iconic red and white lighthouse. First, you cross through the town to reach the western side. From there, the trail follows the beach between the North Sea and dunes, dotted with small thatched-roof houses, to the southern tip of the island. Upon reaching the southernmost point, you can enjoy panoramic views of the neighboring islands of Amrum (to the right) and Föhr (to the left). On a clear day, you can even make out the individual beach chairs along the shore. On the eastern side of the island, the trail leads back to the harbor with calmer surf and views of the lighthouse, where culinary delights such as Sylt mussels and crêpes await.

Cape Horn on Hörnum’s west beach is recommended as a stopover.

Directions

We start at the parking lot at Hörnum Harbor and first walk through the town center to the west coast. To do this, we pass Mittelweg, Rantumer Straße, and An der Düne until we reach the Kersig settlement via the green valley. Here, we keep right and walk along the Dünenweg to the beach crossing. At the beach, we turn left and walk around the southern tip of the island until we reach the lighthouse on the east side. There, we cross the beach onto the paved promenade and walk back to the harbor and starting point.

Equipment

Most of the route is covered on the beach, so windproof clothing and shoes suitable for sand are recommended. In summer, walking barefoot is possible.

Arrival & Parking

From Westerland, follow the signs to Hörnum. Once in Hörnum, follow the main road to the harbor.

There is a large paid parking lot right next to the harbor, which is also the starting point of the tour.

Take bus line 2 to the final stop at Hörnum Harbour.
