A short loop on the new bike path takes you past the island's former naval air base to the natural paradise of Braderup Heath. Even Sylt connoisseurs will discover something new on this tour!

First, the route passes through the lesser-known Old Westerland, which captivates with its charming thatched-roof houses and the small Frisian Church of St. Niels. The route then crosses the former naval air base. It was only opened to cyclists and walkers in 2018 after its restoration. The new cross-axis connects Westerland with Munkmarsch, shortening the route between Westerland and the Wadden Sea. From Munkmarsch, the route continues to Braderup, where both the beautiful thatched-roof houses and the Braderup Heath nature reserve can be admired. The return route also follows largely car-free cycle paths via Wenningstedt to Westerland.

In Braderup, a visit to the informative exhibition at the nature centre of the Sylt Nature Conservation Association is worthwhile.

Directions

The tour starts at Westerland train station and leads first through Old Westerland, past the village church of St. Niels. We continue along the Sjipwai to the large intersection at Bahnweg. We cross this towards the airport and then keep left towards the golf course. Before reaching the golf course, we continue straight ahead onto the grounds of the former naval air base. This path is closed to cars after a short distance, allowing us to follow it undisturbed to Munkmarsch. Once there, we keep left along the main road to Braderup. There, we turn right onto the street "Üp di Hiir" to reach the parking area at Braderup Heath. We make a short loop through Braderup and, before reaching the golf course, rejoin the cycle path towards Wenningstedt. At the end of this path, we cross the pedestrian bridge and then turn left. At the traffic lights, we turn right onto Bahnweg and follow it back to the train station.

Bicycles are not allowed in the Braderup Heath. Please leave your bicycle in the car park and explore the nature reserve on foot.
