A good 8 km over fields, dikes and pastures through the Tinnum meadows with a view of the Rantum Basin and the magnificent expanse of the Wadden Sea.

You start in the center of Tinnum, but quickly leave the houses behind and head straight into nature—past horse pastures, Galloway cattle, and flocks of birds. Narrow meadow roads lead directly to the dike at Rantum Basin. With luck, you might spot rare bird species resting and breeding in the bird sanctuary. In any case, you'll have a magnificent, unobstructed view of the Wadden Sea. Here, you can enjoy the tranquility of the island's east, interrupted only by the bleating of sheep grazing on the dike. After a few kilometers heading east, you begin the return journey, which takes you through the rural meadows of Tinnum on a paved bike path back to the starting point.

Directions

A narrow sandy path begins opposite the starting point, Tinnum Community Center. Follow it to the end and then turn left. Now ignore three junctions on the left and take the fourth left, passing the Wiesengrund Riding Stables. Follow the paved road (watch out for traffic) to the intersection, cross it straight ahead, and then turn right towards the dike. Now walk straight towards the Rantum Basin. At the end of the path, you will already have a wonderful view of the protected body of water. Keep left and walk east along the foot of the dike for a good stretch. On this section, you should expect loose sheep and the occasional opening of gates. After a while, turn left again to start your journey home. If you see Keitum train station from the dike, you are approximately at the right height. Walk onto Bäderstrasse and take the second paved road on the left. This is a newly developed cycle and pedestrian path. Follow it straight to the end, then turn right behind the zoo onto Ziegeleiweg. Follow this path to the end, then turn left onto Dirksstraße, where your starting and finishing point, the Tinnum community center, is almost in sight.

In changeable weather, good rain gear is recommended, as there are only a few shelter options.

Arrival & Parking

From Westerland, follow Silwai Street until you see the Tinnum Community Center on your left. There's a free parking lot directly behind it.

There is a small free parking lot behind the Tinnum community center (Dirksstraße 11).

It can be reached in 3 minutes by bus number 6 from Westerland central bus station, and in 18 minutes by bus "Kleiner Tinnumer." The route starts at the "Tinnum Gemeinde" stop.

At the dike cross of the Rantum Basin there is an information stand with lots of interesting information about the local flora and fauna.

safety instructions

Please be aware of traffic on the narrow country roads. Some cars travel quite fast there. The footpath on the dike is somewhat uneven in places. Here, you can take the paved path at the base of the dike.
