Scenic bike tour from Westerland to Hörnum to the southern information pillars of the whale sanctuary.

Along the entire west beach of Sylt, you can spot porpoises in calm seas. To protect the preferred habitat of the small bottlenose dolphins from disturbance, Europe's first whale sanctuary was established in 1999. To make the significance of the whale sanctuary and its diverse aspects tangible, the “Sylt Whale Trail”: Information desks and steles with exciting nature information were set up at 22 beach crossings and promenades.

The following information panels of the Southern Whale Trail can be visited on this tour:

  • Westerland, Himmelsleiter platform: "Marine mammals and sea ducks"
  • Westerland Robbenweg beach crossing: "Whalewatching in the National Park"
  • Rantum main beach: "Protection from underwater noise"
  • Rantum Zanzibar: "Nursery of small whales"
  • Beach crossing K4 (Bunker Hill): "Underwater monitoring"
  • Hörnum Campsite: "Large Whale Strandings"
  • Hörnum Platform Main Beach: "Sylt porpoise research led to the creation of a whale sanctuary"
  • Hörnum South Cape/East Beach: "Experience the forces of nature"
  • Hörnum Ende Odde-Wai: "Coastal Protection in the National Park"

Directions

The tour starts at the Himmelsleiter beach access point in Westerland and leads west past the Südwäldchen (South Woods) along the main road to Rantum. From the southern edge of Rantum, we switch to the old island railway line east of the main road until it intersects with the main road again at the Sansibar restaurant. From here, we continue on the paved path alongside the road to the K4 parking lot. We then cross the road and continue on the island railway line to Hörnum. In Hörnum, we stay on the main road until we reach Strandstraße (Beach Street), which leads us to the lighthouse. To reach the Odde (spit), we take the road An der Düne (At the Dune). The last part of the tour is on foot.
