Scenic bike tour from Westerland to List to the northern information pillars of the whale sanctuary.

Along the entire west beach of Sylt, you can spot porpoises in calm seas. To protect the preferred habitat of the small bottlenose dolphins from disturbance, Europe's first whale sanctuary was established in 1999. To make the significance of the whale sanctuary and its diverse aspects tangible, the “Sylt Whale Trail”: Information desks and steles with exciting nature information were set up at 22 beach crossings and promenades.

The following information panels of the Northern Whale Trail can be visited on this tour:

  • Westerland main crossing Friedrichstraße/upper promenade: "Whale and Seawatching on Sylt"
  • Westerland North Sea Clinic: "Healthy Sea, Healthy Life"
  • Wenningstedt Seestraße: "Marine mammals in the national park. Seals and whales"
  • Wenningstedt Main Beach Stairs: "Fishing and Garbage Problems"
  • Wenningstedt viewing platform Berthin Bleegstraße: "Sylt whalers become whale conservationists."
  • Kampen Beach Transition Campsite: "Marine Protected Areas off Sylt"
  • Kampen parking lot balaclava: "Climate protection is ocean protection"
  • List nudist beach: "Marine research"
  • List Weststrandübergang: "Europe's first whale sanctuary"
  • List Ellenbogenberg: "Friendly sea creatures. Small whales up close."

Our tip

To round off the tour, we recommend a visit to the exhibition at the Natural Forces Experience Center in List. The accompanying sustainable bistro invites you to stop for a bite to eat.

Directions

The tour begins at the main beach crossing with the first information panel for the Sylt Whale Trail. From here, we push our bikes a short distance along Friedrichstraße and then turn left onto Andreas-Dirks-Straße. From there, we follow the cycle path parallel to the beach behind the dunes to Wenningstedt. Through Wenningstedt, we cycle past the Haus am Kliff to the village pond. Then we turn left towards Kampen. From here, we follow the cycle path, which leads us through Kampen, past the lighthouse, along the old island railway line, through the untouched dune landscape. At Blidselbucht, we do not cross the road, but keep left to reach Alte Listlandstraße. This takes us west past the shifting dune to the beginning of the Ellenbogen. Past the access road to the Ellenbogen, we continue along the Mövenbergdeich, which we follow to the north promenade to List.

safety instructions

Cycling is not permitted on parts of the route. Please walk your bicycle through the pedestrian zone and on the designated paths. Please park your bicycle at the provided bicycle racks (usually at the foot of the dunes) when visiting the information pillars at the beach access points.
