This tour leads through the green east of the island of Sylt along the dike line and through the traditional Frisian villages of Morsum and Keitum. Along the way, there's an opportunity to visit the Morsum Cliff nature reserve.

Is only the beach beautiful on Sylt? No, the east of the island also has its charms. Here, you can cycle directly between the water and the dike, amidst sheep, marvel at the old Frisian houses of Morsum and Keitum, and gaze out over green meadows as far as the eye can see. Best of all, even in peak season, it's completely quiet – apart from the bleating of the sheep, that is.

Our tip

Café Ingwersen in Morsum is the perfect place to stop halfway through your journey. You can enjoy their delicious homemade cakes and pastries in the lovely rose garden.

Directions

The tour starts at Westerland train station and leads directly into the Tinnum meadows, past Tinnumburg Castle. Along the edge of the Rantum Basin, the route continues from the meadows to the dike. Here, the cycle path runs directly along the water and through flocks of sheep to Morsum. In Morsum, we cycle past the Morsum Church of St. Martin and old thatched-roof farms to the Morsum Cliff. A detour into the nature reserve is worthwhile. Afterwards, the route continues with a short detour via Archsum to Keitum. Here, the route leads past the megalithic tomb and the Sylt museums to Sylt's most famous church, St. Severin's Church. From there, it's almost a direct route back to Westerland.

safety instructions

There are free-roaming sheep on the dike, sometimes walking or lying on the cycle path.

Equipment

Since the wind on Sylt usually comes from the west or east and you have to expect headwinds on this tour either on the outward or return journey, windproof clothing and, if necessary, an e-bike are recommended.

Arrival & Parking

The starting point is in the center of Westerland.
