This tour includes visits to the Rantum Basin bird paradise, the old Frisian village of Keitum, and the beautiful beach of Wenningstedt.

This tour begins amidst unspoiled nature and endless expanses at the Rantum Basin and leads across the green meadows of eastern Sylt to the tranquil village of Keitum with its old, thatched-roof captains' houses. The route also passes the Munkmarsch harbor, where ships once docked for Sylt, before continuing to Wenningstedt. Here, you have the opportunity to visit the Denghoog megalithic tomb and enjoy the view across the North Sea from the newly constructed promenade. Back in Westerland, the tour visits some of the sights of the island's largest town before concluding at the train station.

Directions

We start from Westerland train station and head towards Rantum. We cycle along the bike path parallel to the road until we reach the turnoff to Rantum harbor. Passing the Sylt spring and the harbor, we continue onto the dike of the Rantum basin. Once on the other side of the basin, we cycle through the meadows to the Siidik. Crossing the Siidik and passing under the underpass at Keitum train station, we reach the center of Keitum. From there, we make a detour past Harhoog and then continue north, parallel to the Wadden Sea. Passing the Sylt Museums and St. Severin Church, we reach Munkmarsch. Beyond Munkmarsch, just before entering Braderup, we turn left towards Wenningstedt. The path leads us past the Marine Golf Club to the bridge over the L24. From here, we head north until we reach the village pond. From the village pond, we continue to the Haus am Kliff (House on the Cliff) and the Wenningstedt promenade. From here, we follow the cycle path behind the dunes, parallel to the beach, back to Westerland. We cross Friedrichstrasse and turn left at the Beachbox to pass the churches of St. Christopherus and St. Nikolai on our way to the train station.

Our tip

The history of Sylt is vividly presented in the "Old Frisian House since 1640" and "Sylt Museum" museums. Nearby, you can then enjoy a traditional Frisian cake at Café Nielsen with a view of the Wadden Sea.
