Discover Keitum on foot on a special walk through the centuries.
Keitum was the island's metropolis in earlier centuries - until Westerland received city rights in 1905.

Families who made their living from seafaring lived here, along with craftsmen and farmers; there was a pastor, a teacher, and a miller. A doctor and a pharmacist first arrived in the 18th century.

Many buildings no longer show their history, so in 2017 information panels - so-called "history points" - were set up in the village to ensure that Keitum's past and its former importance were not forgotten.

This tour takes you through Keitum, taking in all 23 historical sites. A flyer including a map with the locations marked is available at the tourist information offices or for download available.

Directions

We begin our tour at the first historical site, St. Severin's Church, and then follow the Old Church Path southwards. This path leads us past the Mühlenhof and Packhaus historical sites. Upon reaching the Weberhof, we turn left onto Am Kliff street for a short detour to Nielsen's Coffee Garden. Passing Haus Flora, we then turn onto Uwe-Jens-Lornsen-Wai. The island's first pharmacy was located here. Next, the Old Frisian House and the Sylt Museum await us. Continuing southwards, we pass the former Frisian Hall and follow the road to the Keitum Mill. From here, we turn left onto Am Tipkenhoog street, which leads us to Helhoog. Along Harhoog, with views of the Keitum Wadden Sea, we reach Kairem Ingiwai, which takes us back to the town center and Gurtstig, where Gustav Jenner's birthplace awaits us. Continuing north on the road, we pass the Landschaftliches Haus (Landscape House), Boy Lornsen's residence, and the Royal Customs House. We turn onto the Alter Kirchenweg (Old Church Path) to reach the Lornsen Monument. Back on the Gurtstig, we see Friedrich Petersen's birthplace, the Old School, and the Old Frisian Inn. We then follow the Munkmarscher Chaussee (Munkmarsch Road) north. On the way back to the parking lot and starting point, we pass the Almshouse, the Rectory, and the Old Train Station.

Our tip

A visit to the Old Frisian House (dating back to 1640) and the Sylt Museum is well worth it! A combination ticket is available for both museums.

safety instructions

Please park, if possible, in the designated free parking areas outside of Keitum instead of in the few parking areas in the village.
