A walk along the art and culture trail on Kampen's west coast
Since 2008, an art and culture trail has been created in Kampen, honoring artists and creative professionals who felt a connection to Kampen. They have made Kampen what it is today.

Kampen's exceptionally diverse landscape, stretching from beach to mudflats, dunes to heathland, invites you to enjoy relaxing walks year-round, recharging your batteries for everyday life. What's more, in and around Kampen you can also walk in the footsteps of the past.
A past that includes illustrious names of well-known artists, writers, publishers, and public figures who found inspiration on Sylt in general and in Kampen in particular. Some of them stayed here temporarily, while others even found a permanent (adopted) home in this Frisian village, first documented in 1543.
Her creative work in Kampen, but also the public portrayal of her impressions of Kampen, gave our village a special magic and charisma that visitors can still feel today and that still inspires people to be creative.
To ensure that these personalities are not forgotten by our guests and our descendants, we have decided to create and continually expand the “Kampen Art Trail”.

A stroll through our idyllic village allows you to follow in the footsteps of important figures at your own pace and discover many a charming spot along the way. And you'll surely find yourself relating to one or two of the quotes on the 40 memorial steles.
The art and culture trail consists of inscribed bronze cast plaques on metal stands, which have been placed at prominent locations in the village.

The art trail is primarily financed through the auction of paintings by Siegward Sprotte from the collection of Falkenstern Fine Art & Atelier Sprotte. You can find more information at Kaamp-Hüs and at Falkenstern Fine Art & Atelier Sprotte.

Our tip

Halfway along the route, the Sturmhaube inn offers a pleasant place to stop for refreshments with a view of the beach.

Directions

We start from the Kaamp-Hüs in the center of Kampen, initially heading west along Strönwai and Westerweg towards Uwe Dune, where we encounter the first stele by Anita Rée. At Uwe Dune, we keep right and pass directly by the stele of Wilhelm Waetzoldt. We cross Kurhausstraße and find ourselves on the hiking trail above the Red Cliff with a view of the Sturmhaube. Here, the stelae of Christian Hinrich, Ernst Rowohlt, Boleslaw Barlog, and Friedrich Hollaender await us. Arriving at the Sturmhaube parking lot, we look out over the beach and the art stele by Carl Zuckmayer. We follow the path to the beach and find the stele of Christian Morgenstern on the wooden platform overlooking the Red Cliff. We then make our way to the Quermarkenfeuer (cross-range light), where the stelae of Clara Tiedemann, Thomas Mann, Emil Nolde, and Renée Sintenis accompany us. We then head east again and cross the main road at Hoogenkamp. Via Norderheide and Parkweg, we reach Avenarius Park, where the stelae of Ferdinand Avenarius and Albert Aereboe can be found. We make a detour through the town to see the stelae of Gret Palucca, Alexej von Kawlensky, and Siegward Sprotte, and then return to the starting point at Kaamp-Hüs via the main road.
