Hünen.kulTour - Hike around Kampen following the traces of Sylt's prehistory and early history

Few regions in Germany are as heavily characterized by burial mounds and megalithic tombs as the North Frisian Islands. These impressive structures date from various eras – from the Neolithic period through the Bronze Age to the Viking Age.

On this exciting excursion, you'll delve into the archaeology of Sylt's prehistory and early history. Along the route, you'll encounter numerous historical artifacts in the form of burial mounds and megalithic tombs. Clearly visible information panels along the way explain the special features of each site and provide fascinating background information.

You can find more information about the graves in the hünen.kultour-Flyer.

Our tip

The Kupferkanne is a wonderful place to stop on this tour. You can enjoy cake on the terrace right next to an old burial mound.
After the hike, a visit to the walk-through Denghoog in Wenningstedt is recommended.

Directions

We start at the parking areas along Westerweg in Kampen. From here, we follow the cycle and hiking path north. We cross Kurhausstraße and keep left until we reach Sturmhaube. We cross the parking area with a view of the cross-range light and turn right. To reach the Krockhooger burial mounds, we follow a narrow path. We then cross Lister Straße and follow the footpath to the left, which leads us along the northern edge of Kampen to the eastern side. Once there, we follow the path up to Kupferkanne. Now we begin our hike above the Braderup Heath. At the level of the golf course, we turn right and head towards the Kampen Lighthouse. From there, we go north and, after a left turn into Esling-Wung, rejoin the cycle path, which leads us back to our starting point.

Route markers

The burial mounds are marked with information steles along the path.

Books

More information about the burial mounds along the tour can be found in the flyer. "giant.culture", which can also be found at the tourist information office in Kampen.
