The hiking route from Tinnum to Morsum takes you away from the raging North Sea and the hustle and bustle of the west, towards more natural and idyllic places and landscapes.

In eastern Sylt, you can discover much of Sylt's original charm and embark on a leisurely journey of discovery. Fourteen "moments" await you at various stops. These include many small windows into the past that allow you to experience how people may have lived and felt over the millennia. The route of the hike along the west-east axis also traces the history of Sylt's origins.

Directions

The starting point of the route can be reached by bus from Westerland central bus station; take line 3 or 4 towards Tinnum/Morsum, stop: "Tinem Hüs" community center (tourist information and restrooms) (timetable at www.svg-busreisen.de). Turn right until you reach the birthplace of the famous Sylt painter Andreas Dirks (1865-1922). After a few minutes' walk, cross Kampende Street at the traffic lights and arrive at point 2: the Old Vogtei.

Cross the street and walk left past the Boy-Lornsen-Schule for about 450 m on the Boy Peter Eben Weg to the crossroads, then walk right for another 250 m on the Strandweg towards the west and you will see point 3, the Tinnumburg, on your right.

On the Strandweg (solid gravel path) we return to the crossroads and turn right past the campsite into Koogweg (solid gravel path). To the south is point 5, the former site of the brickworks founded in 1895.

Continue for 200 m to Ziegeleiweg (paved gravel road). Turn left at the campsite and then right onto Südhörn Street. At the end of Südhörn, turn left onto Ostertresker (both asphalt). At the railway crossing, turn right onto Eibenweg (paved gravel road) and continue right along the railway line toward Keitum for about 1 km to Siidik Street (paved until the church).

Walk down "Siidik" to the end. There, the road turns left. Continue to the main street, "Keitumer Landstraße." Cross this road and then immediately right onto the pedestrian/cycle path to the underpass and through to the train station (1 km). On the right-hand side, opposite the beginning of "Koogstraße," continue straight ahead on "Bahnhofstraße" until you reach "Alten Kirchenweg." Here, turn left to point 7, the Church of St. Severin in Keitum.

Walk down to the mudflats (initially a firm gravel path, then an asphalt path directly along the mudflats) and below the cliff towards Morsum for approximately 1,8 km to the Am Tipkenhoog road. Here you will find the old silted-up harbor and the warehouse of Keitum (point 8), and 100 m further on, the "Old Frisian House since 1640" (point 9).

Point 10: "Sylt Museum" and "Sölring Foriining" Take the path to the right up to the Tipkenhoog road (asphalt to Ingiwai) and then left to point 11: Tipkenhoog and Harhoog Hünenkultur.

At the end of Tipkenhoog, turn right and then left onto Ingiwai (asphalt). Continue straight ahead for 3,6 km towards Morsum. Alternatively, if the weather is dry, you can take the path directly along the mudflats. However, this path is often flooded or too soft to walk on.

Walk down Gurtmuasem Street (paved until the "Morsum Kliff" parking lot) and continue straight ahead to the railway crossing. Cross the crossing and walk right past the station to Ingehoog Muasem Hüs (approx. 4,2 km from Keitum).

Once back on the Geestland, follow the guardhouse and cross the railway tracks. To the south of Morsum lies an approximately 800-year-old cultural monument.

Not far from the Nösse parking lot is the Morsum Cliff Nature Reserve, a cliff up to 20 meters high. Once you reach the Wadden Sea, turn left (west) and continue walking toward the cliff.

From the Morsum Cliff, walk back over the Nösistich, cross the bridge again, cross the Litjmuasem street and then reach the end point: the SVG bus stop at Terpstich, where you can take line 4 back to the central bus station in Westerland without changing trains.

safety instructions

The little etiquette for protected areas:

- All protected areas are marked with official signs.

- Pay attention to information panels. They contain information about the conservation purpose of the region and the animals and plants in the area.

- The Wadden Sea is a vital refueling point for millions of migratory birds. Please avoid bird gatherings as much as possible. Do not disturb nesting birds.

- Dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the entire protected area.

- Keep your distance from resting seals, fur seals and seabirds.

- Camping, making fires and leaving official paths is prohibited.

- Please do not camp in the overgrown dunes.

- Take your rubbish with you.

- Do not feed seagulls.

- One more request: Do not remove any animals or plants.

- Vitally important: Under no circumstances should you attempt a mudflat hike on your own! As harmless as the Wadden Sea may look at low tide, the tide can quickly surprise you and reclaim this idyllic natural area.
