In eastern Sylt, you'll discover much of the island's unspoiled charm and can explore at your own pace. Fourteen "moments" await you at various stations along the route. These include many glimpses into the past, offering insights into how people may have lived and felt throughout the millennia. The hike along the west-east axis also traces the history of Sylt's formation.
Information on each point along the way is in the Tour flyer (Greetings and kisses with Otto).

Directions
We walk to the right until we reach the birthplace of the famous Sylt painter Andreas Dirks (1865–1922). After a few minutes' walk, we cross Kampende Street at the traffic lights and arrive at point 2: the Old Landvogtei (bailiwick).
We cross the road and walk along the Boy-Lornsen-School for about 450 m on Boy Peter Eben Weg until we reach the crossroads. There we continue to the right for 250 m on Strandweg heading west and see point 3, the Tinnumburg, on our right.
The path along the beach (a firm gravel path) leads back to the crossroads, then turns right past the campsite onto the Koogweg (also a firm gravel path). Point 5, the former site of the brickworks founded in 1895, is located just south of this point.
We continue for about 200 meters to Ziegeleiweg (a firm gravel path), turn left at the campsite, and then right onto Südhörn. At the end of Südhörn, we turn left onto Ostertresker (both are paved). At the railway crossing, we take Eibenweg (a firm gravel path) to the right and continue walking along the right side of the railway line towards Keitum for about 1 kilometer until we reach Siidik (asphalt as far as the church).
We walk along the "Siidik" to its end. There, the road bends to the left. We continue until we reach the main road, "Keitumer Landstraße." We cross this road and then immediately turn right onto the pedestrian and cycle path, continuing to the underpass and through it to the train station (1 km). "Koogstraße" begins directly opposite on the right. We walk straight ahead on "Bahnhofstraße" until we reach "Alter Kirchenweg." Here, we turn left and continue to point 7, the Church of St. Severin in Keitum.
We then walk down to the mudflats (initially a firm gravel path, then an asphalt path directly on the mudflats) and below the cliff towards Morsum for about 1,8 km until we reach the road Am Tipkenhoog. Here we find the old silted-up harbor and the warehouse of Keitum (point 8) and 100 m further on the "Old Frisian House since 1640" (point 9).
Point 10: "Sylt Museum" and "Sölring Foriining". We take the path to the right uphill to Tipkenhoog road (asphalt to Ingiwai) and continue left to Point 11: Tipkenhoog and Harhoog megalithic culture.
At the end of Tipkenhoog, we turn right and then left onto Ingiwai (asphalt). We continue straight ahead for 3,6 km towards Morsum. Alternatively, in dry conditions, we can take the path directly along the mudflats. However, this path is often flooded or too soft to walk on.
We walk along Gurtmuasem Street (asphalt road to the "Morsum Kliff" car park) and continue straight ahead to the railway crossing. We cross this and walk along the right side of the train station to Ingehoog Muasem Hüs (approximately 4,2 km from Keitum).
Back on the Geest plateau, we follow the Guartmuasem trail and cross the railway tracks. South of Morsum lies a cultural monument approximately 800 years old.
Not far from the Nösse car park is the Morsum Kliff nature reserve, a cliff coast up to 20 meters high. Once we reach the Wadden Sea, we turn left (west) and continue walking towards the cliff.
From Morsum Cliff, we hike back via Nösistich, cross the bridge again, cross Litjmuasem Road, and finally reach the end point of the tour: the SVG bus stop at Terpstich. From here, we take bus line 4 back to the central bus station in Westerland without changing buses.
safety instructions
The little etiquette for protected areas:
- All protected areas are marked with official signs.
- Look out for informative signs. They contain information about the conservation purpose of the region as well as about the animals and plants in the area.
- The Wadden Sea is a vital refueling stop for millions of migratory birds. Please keep a wide berth around groups of birds and do not disturb nesting birds.
- Throughout the entire protected area, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.
- Keep your distance from resting seals, sea lions, and seabirds.
- Camping, making fires, and leaving official paths are prohibited.
- Please do not camp in the overgrown dunes.
- Take your trash with you.
- Do not feed seagulls.
- One more request: Please do not remove any animals or plants.
- Most importantly: Never attempt a mudflat hike on your own! However harmless the Wadden Sea may look at low tide, the tide can quickly surprise you and reclaim the natural area.
