Harbor, beach, dunes, dike and Wadden Sea – this hike reveals the full diversity of Rantum.

This tour leads from Rantum Harbor on the edge of the Rantum Basin to the west beach, then through the town center, the Wadden Sea, and the dike back to the harbor. At the start, you can observe a variety of bird species at the Rantum Basin, before the fresh North Sea breeze and the surf await you on the beach section. A beautiful wooden path continues to the center of Rantum, which is characterized by its thatched-roof houses. The tour concludes along the edge of the Wadden Sea and the Rantum-Inge dike, offering sweeping views of the mainland and the national park, and back to the starting point.

Good to know

Our tip

At the end of the tour, the Sylt coffee roastery invites you to enjoy coffee and cake. Alternatively, the beach hut on Rantum's main beach is a great place to stop.

Directions

We start at Rantum harbor and initially follow the hiking trail between the campground and the Rantum basin. Passing through the campground's main entrance and after crossing Hörnumer Straße, we reach the west beach via a wooden walkway. There, we turn left and walk south along the beach to the beach access point at Seeheim. We climb the beach steps there and then keep right. Following the wooden walkway through the dunes, we reach the main beach, where we walk past the Strandmuschel restaurant on our left towards the center of Rantum. Via the beach path and the Merret-Lassen-Wai, we reach the Wadden Sea, along whose coast we walk north until we reach the dike, which leads us north again to Rantum harbor.

safety instructions

Dune protection is island protection—so please stay on the designated paths. The last section of the trail leads through a bird sanctuary. Please stay on the paths here and keep dogs on a leash.

Equipment

Part of the route is on the beach, so windproof clothing and shoes suitable for sand are recommended. In summer, barefoot walking is possible.

During floods or heavy rainfall, the path along the mudflats can be very muddy, so waterproof shoes or rubber boots are recommended. Alternatively, the path can be continued through Rantum and along the dike.

Arrival & Parking

From Westerland, follow the signs toward Rantum. Before entering the town, turn left toward Sylt Quelle and the harbor. Follow Hafenstraße until you reach the harbor.
