Although the Giants in the Wind were once highly controversial, they are now one of Sylt's landmarks. The bright green figures with twisted heads and irregular proportions have been a fixture at Westerland's train station since 2001. The giants were designed by Martin Wolke following a competition to redesign the station grounds. They depict a traveling family battling against the wind on Sylt. The suitcases and bags scattered in front of the station serve as seating.
