The Kampen bird hide is now a pure bird sanctuary and a museum.

The bird hide is located directly on the mudflats, about 2 kilometers from Kampen.

As an interactive experience center, modern museum, bird and nature reserve, and cultural monument, it captivates visitors of all ages.

The bird hide lies in a somewhat enchanted setting in the small wooded area by the mudflats. A circular path leads visitors through a floodplain forest, into the bird hides, over the dike, and along a pond. There are 35 information panels along the path that introduce visitors to the fascinating flora and fauna and also explain the bird hide's exciting history. Our younger guests can explore the bird hide in a playful way with the help of a puzzle. The entire bird hide area has been a nature reserve since 1935, making it one of five protected areas in the immediate vicinity.

What we can tell you before your visit to the bird hide…but shhh:

250 years ago, the people of Kampen received their official "duck-trapping permit" from the Danish king. Decoys were used to lure wild ducks into resting on the freshwater ponds during their journey. As soon as they were guided over the trapping whistle brought by whalers from Holland, their fate was sealed. In some years, up to 25.000 ducks were caught. By 1912, only 99 remained, and the bird hide had to be closed.

The entire area was revitalized in the 80s thanks to the efforts of Christian Hansen, who rebuilt the complex with the help of sponsors. The museum is operated by the Söl'ring Foriining, the Sylt Association for Cultural Affairs, Landscape Protection, and Monument Preservation.
