Sea level Lister community center

Here, at the Lister community center, you can see how high the water would be in the event of a severe storm surge and how much more will be added by the end of the century due to climate change. 
Even if the dunes might make it seem different, Sylt is located on flat land and when it's really cold, every centimeter counts!

Storm surges occur when storms push North Sea waters onto the coast, causing the water level to rise briefly. Small storm surges occur every year, but occasionally extreme events occur where water levels can reach several meters above normal high tide. While the Sylt dikes and the Westerland seawall effectively protect against flooding, we sometimes forget how close the water actually is to us.
