Beacon in the park
The lighthouse was built in 1080 and remained in operation until 1997.
In 2003, marine researchers installed a radar system on the disused lighthouse, including a five-meter-high steel structure that measured currents, waves, and water depth.
2013:
The lighthouse is abandoned and dismantled
On October 28, 2013, hurricane "Christian" swept across the island with wind speeds of up to 184 km/h. Due to the heavy sand loss caused by the hurricane, the lighthouse threatened to collapse and ultimately had to be dismantled and removed by employees of the Waterways and Shipping Authority.
2016:
Fundraising campaign is launched
Since its dismantling, the lighthouse has been stored behind the Hörnum campsite. The municipality had purchased it from the Waterways and Shipping Authority for €600, its scrap value, with the goal of reinstalling it at some point. However, the necessary funds were lacking to rebuild it. For this reason, municipal representative Ulrike Lund launched a fundraising campaign to raise the €40.000 needed for its installation.
2018:
A beacon in the heart of the town
Supported by 24 dowels anchored in the concrete foundation, the lighthouse has stood in the town center since 2018. Over 100 companies, private individuals, locals, and guests participated in the fundraising campaign.
In addition to donations in kind, 46.300 euros were collected and only thanks to the donors, who were immortalized on the donation plaque, could the landmark be erected at its new location.
