Art stele Carl Zuckmayer
The writer Carl Zuckmayer spent the end of 1932 at the Kampen holiday home of publisher Peter Suhrkamp. On New Year's Eve, he took up pen and ink and put his thoughts on paper:
The old year is coming to an end,
the new one is just around the corner.
This may be a good year!
The fog in the heath stagnates,
the lighthouse crouches behind the fog
and keeps watch on earth.
The sea sleeps, the mudflats rest,
the wild goose sleeps full of mussels,
the wax drips from the lights.
We drink our port wine quietly,
Whatever may come
– Heaven help the poets.
Carl Zuckmayer was born the son of a factory owner in Nackenheim, Rhineland-Palatinate. After graduating from high school, he volunteered for World War I, then studied several subjects in Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg, including art history. He dropped out, however, and worked as a dramaturge and assistant director in Berlin, Kiel, and Munich. His first drama, "Wege des Kreuzes," was performed in 1920, but it was unsuccessful. This was followed by a brief engagement with Berthold Brecht at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In 1925, Zuckmayer achieved success.
His breakthrough came with the performance of his comedy "The Merry Vineyard" – the comedy became the most successful German play of the 1920s.
In 1928, the robber drama "Schinderhannes" was published; in the same year, Zuckmayer wrote the screenplay for the worldwide hit "The Blue Angel" starring Marlene Dietrich. In 1931, Zuckmayer wrote the play "The Captain of Köpenick," which also achieved widespread popularity. Due to his critical statements against the regime, the writer soon became a target of the Nazis. When his house was confiscated by the Gestapo in 1939, Zuckmayer emigrated to the USA.
After the war, he returned to Germany in 1946. That same year, his drama "The Devil's General," a reckoning with the Nazi regime, premiered in Zurich. In 1955, Carl Zuckmayer received the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. His autobiography, "As if it were a piece of me," was published in 1966.
