From the hustle and bustle of the big city to the island idyll: After the end of the Second World War, Alexander Camaro commuted repeatedly between Berlin and Kampen, where he was drawn by his "love of the sea and the landscape." In the 1960s, Camaro was involved with a private art association in Kampen, which presented remarkable exhibitions by artists from all over Germany. In 1971, the artist set up a summer studio on Kampen's Kuckucksweg, where he primarily created large-format oil paintings. His professional career began unusually: At the age of 16, the young Alexander Camaro worked as an artist. He later laid the foundation for his artistic work at the art academy in his hometown under the important expressionist Otto Mueller. Camaro then switched to another genre: in Dresden, he completed dance training with the renowned choreographer Mary Wigman, who is considered one of the most influential pioneers of rhythmic-expressive dance. Alexander Camaro made a living from dance for the next few years – among other things, he became a solo dancer at the Salzburg Festival – but painted in every free hour. As a "degenerate artist," however, he was banned from exhibiting by the Nazis in 1933.
In 1952, Camaro was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau, a position he held until 1969. One of his students was Renata Gentner – who initially became his master student and later his wife. After his professorship, Camaro worked freelance and designed, among other things, several art objects in public spaces – the most famous being the glass block windows of the Berlin Philharmonic and those of the State Library. A newspaper wrote about his second home in the far north: "The house on Sylt was dear to him: just beyond the simple wooden fence were the dunes, the sea just a stone's throw away. Those were happy days for Alexander Camaro, long hours at the easel, side by side with his wife Renata, who was also a painter. Camaro certainly had no idea that the house would one day help secure his posthumous reputation." In fact, Renata Camaro had founded a foundation shortly before her husband's death, the capital of which came from the lucrative sale of the house in Kampen. The foundation's funds were used to acquire a historic building in Berlin's Potsdamer Straße gallery district, which has been exhibiting the work of Camaro since 2011. One art historian described Camaro as "for him, painting was always at the center not only of his artistic creation, but of his life in general."

Car: From the direction of List and Wenningstedt, take the main road to Kampen.
Bicycle: The old island railway line provides a north-south connection as a cycling and hiking path. A cycle path runs alongside Braderuper Weg from Keitum/Braderup to Kampen.
On foot: You can reach Kampen from Westerland/Wenningstedt and List both via the beach and the hiking trail along the former island railway line. From Wenningstedt, a wooden walkway leads through the dunes over the Red Cliff to Kampen. From Braderup/Keitum, you can walk along the heathland paths along the mudflats.
Bus: You can reach Kampen with line 1 from Westerland and List.
