Sylt is of particular importance because 50% of Schleswig-Holstein's heathland is still found on the island alone. Not only the three heath species—crowberry, cross-leaved heath, and common heather—can be found here, but also spotted orchid, arnica, sundew, and lungwort. Redshanks, shelducks, and oystercatchers build their nests in the heathland or the large salt marshes on the mudflats. Therefore, it is important to protect the heathland to preserve biodiversity.
