The tradition of the Biike goes back centuries: fires were once lit along the North Frisian coast to bid farewell to the captains who were setting sail again after the winter break.
Over time, the meaning of the festival changed - today, many Sylt residents return to their home island on this very day to celebrate the Biike fire and the traditional kale meal with their families.
In Wenningstedt, the torchlit procession is an essential part of the Biike tradition, starting at the Friesenkapelle Chapel. Here, locals and their guests are treated to mulled wine, kale soup, and torches. The procession then heads toward Biikeplatz (about a 20-minute walk), where, after speeches in Sölring and High German, the Biike Pile is lit.
In Kampen, the Biike evening begins at the fire station. After the torchlight ceremony, a torchlit procession continues on foot to the Biikeplatz square in the Norddörfer community between Kampen and Wenningstedt.
Insider knowledge:
The Biike pile is already built in the days leading up to February 21. A night watch ensures that the youth of neighboring villages don't play a prank and secretly light the Biike. Otherwise, the Frisian festival would have to be canceled.
