The Lister Wanderdüne

The shifting dune paradise
in List on Sylt

Discover the largest contiguous shifting dune area in Europe

The image shows a typical dune path on the island of Sylt. In the foreground, a wooden walkway winds its way through a hilly dune landscape. The dunes are covered with a mixture of grass and heather, giving them a typically North German appearance.

Attention travel enthusiasts! Welcome to List on Sylt, where the impressive shifting dunes will be the absolute highlight of your trip. These majestic sand dunes, rising up to 30 meters high, are not only the largest contiguous shifting dune area in Europe, but also uniquely characterize the picturesque townscape of List.

Even from the road leading into town, you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful natural surroundings and the fascinating dune landscape. Here, you can experience the dynamic power of nature up close: The shifting dunes move up to ten meters each year and have, in the past, buried pastures and fields, even entire houses. Roads had to be relocated to make way for this natural spectacle.

But don't worry—local conservationists are working tirelessly to preserve this fascinating landscape. Planting marram grass, whose roots penetrate up to 12 meters into the soil and stabilize the sand masses, ensures that the dunes don't migrate into the North Sea.

Experience this unique natural spectacle and be enchanted by the incomparable beauty of the shifting dunes in List on Sylt. Whether hiking, photographing, or simply enjoying the magnificent View – you won’t soon forget this adventure.

Get ready for an unforgettable experience in nature and discover the shifting dune in List on Sylt during a exclusive guided hike – a highlight that every traveler must see!

The viewing platform

The perfect overview of the breathtaking landscape can be found on the viewing dune at the northwestern entrance to List. From this vantage point in the dunes, you can see not only the unique shifting dune area, but also the entire town of List on Sylt, from the lush salt marshes, the tranquil Königshafen harbor, the beautiful Ellenbogen, and even our neighboring island of Rømø. From Mövenbergstraße, a wooden staircase leads you into the picturesque nature reserve.
