DJH Youth Hostel Hörnum

Experience community & travel sustainably: Welcome to the Hörnum Youth Hostel! The Hörnum Youth Hostel is located in the sunny south of the island of Sylt. 168 beds are spread across 37 cozy rooms. Environmental protection is a matter of course here.

The youth hostel is not only a national park partner but also works closely with the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. It's clear that much of its work revolves around the theme of "experiencing and preserving nature." For example, breakfast is served plastic-free, cleaning is done with microplastic-free products, timers save electricity, and in the medium term, the hostel will completely convert to LED lighting.

The hosts Inga and Philipp are happy about their crew, the shared exchange and the strong team spirit, especially when it comes to environmental issues.

Bistro S-Point

At S-Point in Westerland, you'll find not only creative, regional cuisine, but also genuine comfort food. Classics like shakshuka, fish & chips, and Galloway sausage from the Gänsehof farm in Keitum are served with passion. Sepp has been running this cozy bistro between the bike path and the North Sea since 2016. In summer, you can enjoy the sun on the terrace; in winter, you'll be pampered with blankets and hot water bottles. The friendly team will ensure your complete comfort. 

And because the S-Point has the well-being of the island in mind, they rely on regional ingredients, is a Recup partner and refill station – always with the aim of further developing the sustainable course.

  • With every cod fillet and shakshuka sold, S-Point Sylt plants a tree in the Philippines in cooperation with the “Click A Tree” initiative.

Lund Sylt

Lund Sylt, located in the heart of Hörnum, combines tradition and sustainability in a delightful way. For over three generations, this family-run business with its own bakery, confectionery, and ice cream factory has been baking, cooking, and creating – always with the finest ingredients and a lot of passion. Lund is particularly known for its unique Organic Sylt sourdough breadwhich is made in 48 hours of dough rest without yeast and with exclusively regional ingredients arises. 

Sustainability plays a central role: Seasonal and organic products from Sylt farms and local produce dominate the menu, which offers a fine selection of vegan, vegetarian, and regionally inspired dishes. Whether oven-fresh rolls, North German cuisine, or award-winning ice cream creations – at Lund Sylt, you'll taste the island's love!

  • The organic Sylt wheat flour for Lund Sylt comes from Kai Petersen in Keitum, supplemented with 10% light-grain rye from the Erdbeerparadies organic farm. Even the home-grown wheat sourdough contains only microorganisms found in the Sylt air and grain.

Located directly on the Westerland promenade, with a view of the sea, the Golden Seagull awaits you! Since early summer 2024, Fabian de Vries and Dirk Effler have combined their passion for surfing and good food here. The result? A relaxed Surf deli with Portuguese flairEnjoy creative focaccia variations like "Salmo" or "Carl's Vegetable Garden," along with sweet treats like Pastéis de Nata, excellent coffee, or exquisite wines. Chef Carl brings his experience from fine dining to the table and relies on fresh, seasonal ingredients for uncomplicated enjoyment.

The unique holiday promise of the island of Sylt is linked to its beautiful, unspoiled nature: the beaches, the dunes and heathlands, the rough North Sea and the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea.

Protecting and preserving these is our shared responsibility. Island of Sylt Tourism Service – ISTS for short is the largest tourist service provider on Sylt and is responsible for tourist offers and facilities in the municipality of Sylt (Archsum, Keitum, Morsum, Munkmarsch, Rantum, Tinnum and Westerland).

    In our games for a plastic-free coast, we explore the following questions: What's actually swimming in our ocean? How long does the trash stay there? What does it mean for the animals?

  • A visit to our establishment is holistically guided by the principle of sustainability: bistro, shop, exhibition, Syltdome. Sustainability is a priority in all areas: portion sizes, the origin of food and products on the shelves, sustainable production of goods, electricity from renewable energy sources, natural ventilation instead of air conditioning in the exhibition, an in-house workshop for repairs or construction – this list could go on and on.

Sylt dune wool

On the picturesque Ellenbogen peninsula in List on Sylt, a free-roaming flock of sheep roams the unique nature reserve year-round. As they roam the dunes, they firm up the soil and naturally keep vegetation short. Their fluffy wool protects them year-round from the harsh North Sea climate, providing warmth in winter and cooling in summer. The sheep are sheared once a year, before the wool becomes too heavy.
