August Ohm:
MY PICTURES OF ANTIQUITY – GODDESSES AND IDOLS

01. to 29. August 2026

The topic “ancient images of gods” The artist August Ohm has been exploring this theme in ever-new variations for many years. As early as 1998, Wilhelm Hornbostel, then director of the Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts, exhibited his work. "“Images of Antiquity” was featured in a comprehensive solo exhibition. It comprised a series of Greco-Roman portraits, some of them large-format. August Ohm incorporated the works of John Flaxman, inspired by antiquity—a pinnacle of Neoclassical drawing—into his own collection early on. Over the years, his own small collection of antiquities also grew.

The term "antiquity" generally refers to Greco-Roman antiquity, in the sense of the philosopher Bardaisan, who in the 2nd century AD distinguished his civilized world from the world of barbarians, defining it as a narrow zone from the Atlantic to India. North and south of this, "no one sees sculptors or painters... or poets."
In his new works, August Ohm begins with early Greek Cycladic idols, whose original polychromy has been almost entirely lost, and whose physiognomies can supplement our understanding. Using models from the Archaic and Classical periods, he animates the marble petrification through color and texture. The androgynous features of these ancient figures allow us to interpret their faces, upon close inspection, as kouroi or korai. Through unreal pigmentation and the rhythms of a vibrant or impasto application of paint, these faces appear, on the one hand, detached from reality; on the other hand, through over-dimensioning, abrupt framing, and the accentuation of the paint application, he lends the depictions a new immediacy and presence. The artist's paintings are intended to generate an underlying tension through the ambivalence of alienation and emotional intimacy. The ancient figures enter into a pictorial dialogue with one another. Unlike the countless idealized figures that rush past us on the internet or on posters, his ancient portraits of people are intended to engage in a stimulating dialogue with us.

Her creative work in Kampen, but also the public portrayal of her impressions of Kampen, gave our village a special magic and charisma that visitors can still feel today and that still inspires people to be creative.

To ensure that these personalities are not forgotten by us and our descendants, we have decided to create and continuously expand the "Kampen Art Trail".

On a stroll through our idyllic village, you can follow in the footsteps of important people at your own pace and discover many a secluded spot along the way. The Art and Culture Trail consists of inscribed bronze plaques on metal stands, placed at prominent locations throughout the village. Information about this can be found at Kaamp-Hüs.
