Why do people from abroad come to Sylt? 

Did you know that over 18 percent of Sylt’s residents come from abroad? 
Four people living here tell us about their new beginning on the island:

Bence from Hungary, Eman from North Macedonia, Jana from Syria and Wael from Egypt. 

They all left their homeland for different reasons and now live and work on Sylt. They are happy in their jobs and grateful for the opportunities they have on the island. 
Sylt has become a new home for her – with a secure job. 

In the video, the four Sylt residents report on their everyday life on Sylt. 

Why Sylt?

Sylt is a beautiful island in northern Germany that many people appreciate as a vacation destination. With its long sandy beaches, stunning natural scenery, excellent restaurants, sports facilities, and activities for families, the island has a lot to offer. 

Workers are urgently needed in all sectors, even for people who are not yet fluent in German. Many Sylt companies hire seasonal workers from April to October, but also seek permanent employees year-round. They often help with finding accommodation or provide staff rooms.

In my opinion

Bence has been working as restaurant manager at Landhaus Severin*s in Morsum since 2022. He particularly values ​​the responsibility and leadership of the team. He likes to focus on his guests, as he enjoys chatting with them. Usually by his side: his loyal four-legged friend, Snoopy.

Eman

Eman is a career changer and is working as a sales assistant at Café Wien for the first time. The Syrian native enjoys her job. When things get stressful, she goes out into nature, walks on the beach, and feels deeply grateful to be on Sylt, surrounded by the stunning natural surroundings.

Wael studied tourism and hotel management in Alexandria – ideal qualifications for his work at the Hotel Rungholt in Kampen. At the time of the film, the Egyptian had only been living in Germany for five months. On Sylt, he regularly visits the city library to delve deeper into the German language and its complex grammar.

Jana

For Jana, Sylt is the perfect place to start a family and raise children. The mother of two comes from North Macedonia and enriches the office team at C and A Syltvermietung. She also works as an interpreter and German teacher. She considers Sylt's sunsets the most beautiful in the world.
