Exciting events all year round

The living Advent calendar

This year we are making the Advent season very special for the citizens of Hörnum.

From December 01st to 23rd, a festively decorated window, door, or garden opens every evening somewhere in the village. Accompanied by a small Advent greeting: music, stories, cookies, or simply a pleasant get-together.

You can find out where the door opens on each day using the OrtsApp. There's a map for children, which they can use to receive a sticker at each station. The map is available at the Hörnum Tourist Information Center or at the stations.

The Biikebrennen

The Frisian National Day, or in short: The Biike, is a traditional festival celebrated every year on February 21st and marks the beginning of spring. During this custom, locals and visitors gather at the Hörnum campsite to light a large fire together. The Biike symbolizes not only the farewell to winter but also the coming together of the community. The Biike in Hörnum is an unforgettable experience that celebrates the region's cultural roots and brings people together.

At 17:30 p.m. the torch sale is at the Hörnum Tourist Service

At 18:00 PM, the torchlit procession begins at Biikeplatz, where a speech will be given in German and Frisian. The fire department will be selling drinks on site.

Tip: Reserve a table at the restaurant of your choice in advance for the kale dinner afterwards!

The Hörnum Easter fire

Experience the traditional Easter bonfire in Hörnum, which is especially popular with locals. Torch sales begin at 20:00 p.m. at the beach chair hall. Once you arrive at the campsite, the large Easter bonfire is lit at 20:30 p.m., creating a cozy atmosphere among the dunes. A live band will heat up the atmosphere and invite you to dance and celebrate. The local fire department will also be on hand to provide bratwurst, cold drinks, and mulled wine.

Midsummer Night

When a torchlight hike turns into a beach party, it can only be Midsummer Night in Hörnum!

The shortest night of the year begins with a torchlit procession around the southern tip of the island. Passing the lighthouse, the procession ends on the east beach, where chilled drinks are served around a bonfire right on the beach, accompanied by chilled music in a very special atmosphere.

The torches will be sold starting at 22:00 PM at the corner of Süderende and Odde-Wai, and the fire department will then light them on the beach. Starting at approximately 22:30 PM, we'll begin our hike around the Odde. No registration is necessary; everyone is welcome.

After the hike, there will be a late-night SVG bus from the harbor back to Westerland at 00:30 and 01:30.

Wattwanderung

Tour guide Werner Mansen invites you to experience the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea up close.

How does the tide work? And how do plants survive on sea salt? Why is the plaice flat, and how do you catch a shore crab? And what is a tree worm? And what does the "Sylter Royal" have to do with mussels? You'll find answers to these questions on a mudflat hike. With the National Park mudflat guide, you'll have the opportunity to walk barefoot into the mudflats and explore everything.

Hike around the Odde

The classic Sylt hike – a walk along the beach around the southern tip of the island, with views of the neighboring islands of Amrum and Föhr. Werner will explain which islands and Halligen are nearby, and why the walk around the island now only takes 1,5 hours instead of the previous 3,5 hours.

Hörnum Stories of dunes, steamers and filming

Hörnum used to belong to ghosts and beachcombers. Today, it's a very special place in the south of the island, where film crews regularly visit. And in between? How was it possible for the population to suddenly increase a thousandfold? Where did the large passenger steamers dock? And how did the Kersig settlement, the little Hobbitland, come about? Journalist Wiebke Stitz has lived in Hörnum for twelve years and tells informative and entertaining stories about all these and many more Hörnum stories.
