The reason is simple: The balloons end up in the sea. There they pose a danger to fish and birds, which mistake the strings and balloon remains for food and die a painful death. It takes years for the balloons to decompose in nature. During beach cleanups, wedding balloons are among the most commonly found plastic waste.
