Sunny South
Hello from the south of the island, dear Sylt residents and guests!
If you don’t know us yet, we would like to introduce ourselves briefly: We are Sonja and Rüdiger Netz, the owners of the café & restaurant “Sonniger Süden” in Hörnum.
We are true Sylt natives through and through. We grew up in Hörnum, went to school, fell in love, got married, and raised two children here. We still live and work in the most beautiful place on the island. We opened our "Sunny South" on December 22, 1986. To this day, it remains the sunny yellow house in Hörnum.
Hörnum is located in the south of the island of Sylt, at the coordinates 54° 45' 25.994” N, 8° 17' 16.197” E. Since there is always a bit more sunshine here than in the other island communities, we chose this name 39 years ago
Our company was founded from the very beginning with great dedication and a passion for success. Although the initial period was challenging, the courage that drove us to this project never left us. With a lot of joy, new ideas, and the tremendous support of family and friends, we think we've managed it quite well. We're very proud of that.
In 2020, our outdoor area got a beautiful new look. Our terrace is now a comfortable place to be not only in sunshine, but also in Sylt's foul weather. It is now sheltered from the wind, partially covered, and heated, so you can enjoy and linger longer. Our colorfully decorated coffee garden offers a wealth of attractions. Our restaurant and café has steadily evolved with its food offerings in recent years. What began over 39 years ago as an ice cream parlor and beer terrace has evolved into a culinary experience. Originally, we offered only a limited selection of drinks, ice cream sundaes, coffee, cake, and small snacks. Today, you can enjoy regional, down-to-earth, and varied cuisine with no frills, along with coffee, cake, and ice cream sundaes, of course. In our colorful, maritime Sylt ambience, we serve delicious starters, snacks, and a good selection of fish and meat dishes. Try the golden-brown North Sea plaice or the Sylt lamb.
We offer original Sylt mussels, boiled or savory fried with bacon and onions. Our insider tip: Be sure to try our homemade sauerfleisch (sauerfleisch).
We cook it ourselves and pickle it according to my mother's old recipe. You can also get it in a jar to take home.
Our menu also features subtle Italian-Mediterranean influences. Enjoy bruschetta, gambas al ajillo, pasta, and our homemade pizza, which we've been making ourselves for over ten years. You can also enjoy it at home. Simply order it to go or take it with you to the beach for sunset, along with
a cold beer or a bottle of our new house wine “MEE(H)R Sylt WEIN” Blanc de Noir.
We ask you to place TO GO orders by 17:30 p.m.
Collection is possible by arrangement.
According to the motto: “No cake is not a solution!”
Baking is my passion, and I've turned my hobby into my profession. Every day, I create new cakes and pies, develop new recipes, and experiment with different flavors. This is how the most delicious creations are born.
that you can't resist. For example: Hörnum vanilla slice, Friesenstreusel with plum jam, Wanderdüne with cream meringue,
Wattschnitte chocolate cream, Sylt red berry compote cake, eggnog cake, spaghetti ice cream cake, cherry cloud, and much more. I'm also happy to accept custom cakes for special occasions. Come by and see for yourself.
It's worth it, you'll see. Of course, you can also take all the varieties home with you. Our insider tip: Be sure to try the Hörnum vanilla slices!
We look forward to your visit.
