Winter on Sylt

Let the winter wind blow you to the North Sea?

Even in the cooler seasons, Sylt offers the perfect mix of secluded beaches and magical culinary, cultural and sporting experiences.

Only the wind is in a hurry here

In a restaurant, you'll spontaneously get a wonderful window table, on the beach, you won't see another person for miles, the comfortable apartment was available at a fantastic price, the shopping trip is almost meditative, and the North Sea puts on a spectacular wave performance. The people of Sylt, on the other hand, are totally relaxed and never short of a joke. On New Year's Eve and Biike, it almost feels like summer, with colorful life bubbling everywhere.
Yes, without question:

Winter on Sylt is actually a different season.

Winter tips

This is what you can experience on Sylt during the cold season!

"Winter on Sylt"
by Frank Deppe

© Frank Deppe

The latest book by long-time Sylt journalist Frank Deppe has a fitting title for the current season: The publication "Winter on Sylt" explores the cold season from a variety of perspectives. Present and past are reflected in this book through entertaining and informative texts and numerous photographs. One season, two faces: Winter on Sylt can be gentle. Then, snow settles like powdered sugar over the landscape and the Frisian houses, the healthy, bracing climate unfolds with long walks on secluded beaches, the last Sylt thatch farmer reaps the harvest, and the hardiest of souls dive into the cool waters of the North Sea for the traditional Christmas swim.
But winter on Sylt can also be merciless. Storm surges devour the land, the island sinks meters deep in snow, iceboaters are forced to undertake perilous journeys, and people lose their lives amidst the largely frozen Wadden Sea. "Winter on Sylt" – a reading that will reawaken memories of the 1978 snow catastrophe for Sylt residents and introduce you to a special season that now attracts more and more hardy guests. The book (ISBN 978-3-947096-26-8) is now available in Sylt bookstores and other outlets for 12,80 euros.

Warming up in Frisian

In winter, Sylt shows off its sweet side. It can also heat things up with spices.

Tea with a vision

The wind chases clouds across the marsh and the Keitum Office Building into the winter-empty pastures. The team of experts not only sells tea, select varieties, and their own blends, but also takes care of the well-being of their guests.

From classic chai with warming elements to elegant green tea, the Kontorhaus and its tea room are filled with the aroma of soothing creations. Outside, the wind blows against the windows, and the fireplace radiates a cozy warmth.

Wide world meets rough
North Sea island

Almonds from California and raw cocoa from Venezuela – the Sylt Chocolate Manufactory creates delicious creations from it, for example. And when the cocoa melts in the cauldrons, it not only smells rich and sweet of chocolate. The aroma of vanilla from the tropical island of Réunion blends with the scent of rum from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.

It smells of anise and cinnamon, of spices from around the world. From the bags and cans wafts a scent reminiscent of the markets of Sri Lanka and the Moluccas. Warming. Exotic. Sunny. A small bar of chili is recommended for a walk along the wintry beach and the windswept sea – it warms you from the inside.

High-proof liquor in the cult bar

The surf rolls roaringly onto the empty, storm-swept west beach, the cold prickling your face. Anyone who, after a winter beach walk, returns to the "Zanzibar.", you might want something strong. The legendary beach restaurant is perfectly equipped in this regard.

When it comes to whisky alone, Zanzibar seeks first-class casks in Scotland. There, every region and almost every distillery has its own distinctive whisky, with the taste and aroma reflecting the area. You can taste and smell peat and smoke in an Islay malt, for example. According to the Zanzibar experts, this is the perfect way to warm up after a winter day by the water.

history and stories

Weatherproof museum highlights from the whaling era

If you want to immerse yourself in something during a winter walk on the Keitum mudflats, we recommend Sylt's history rather than the North Sea – temperature-wise. On a trip into the island's history, Sylt Museum several thousand years of background knowledge clearly presented to you.

Stories of hunters, gatherers and true survivalists are particularly impressive in winter,

You can experience firsthand how icy cold and unpredictable wind and waves can be. No poor people lived right next door, as becomes clear when walking through the rooms of the old captain's house. Built in 1640 and largely preserved in its original condition, the Old Frisian House a small time machine.

Experience nature up close

Winter hike from Morsum to Wenningstedt

Frost glitters in the morning sun, the path along the Morsum Cliff leads you into solitude. The heath is covered in a fine layer of frost, and on the mudflats you feel a rare, almost magical silence. The cliffs glow in warm caramel and red tones, all the way to deep black. As you ascend, you see golden dunes and the mudflats shimmer in all shades of blue. The trail continues through the Braderup Heath – with a view of the mudflats, the lighthouse, and wind-shaped trees. Kampen you hike to the North Sea.

In the afternoon the low sun bathes the Red Cliff in golden light, long shadows fall across the beach. The cold wind prickles your face. Slowly the night draws near, and in Wenningstedt People watch the sunset on the steps – perhaps with mulled wine in hand. A perfect winter day on Sylt.

Winter mudflat hikes

The Natural Forces Adventure Center in List also offers mudflat tours in winter. The mudflats are especially lively in the cold season – perfect for avoiding cold feet and red cheeks. The smaller groups allow you to enjoy nature in peace. The often summery smell of the mudflats is absent, and the air is clear and fresh. With just a few fellow hikers, it feels like you're far away. Two hours fly by – a true winter wonderland!

Winter fun with children and grandchildren

Warm North Sea water flows through current channels and creates waves. This is how winter bathing is possible without cold feet – in the Sylt Wave

If you prefer to cross water pools on dry feet, we recommend the shark tunnel in the AquariumAnd wind speeds at the touch of a button can be Natural Forces Adventure Center to adjust.

There is also more space for digging on the beach, and in the Villa motley Children aged 3 to 13 years meet for creative adventures. Those who prefer skateboarding indoors to wearing boots on the beach or want to become a soccer king will love the Fun sports hall love.

Winter camping on Sylt

If the thought of winter winds on the island outdoors doesn't send you into a state of shock, then you are warmly welcome at the island's two year-round campsites, even (and especially) on winter days.

Auf dem Südhörn campsite In Tinnum you will be welcomed by the Dau family with a warm smile, and Jürgensen family from Mühlenhof in Morsum takes the well-being of guests very personally.

Auf dem Hörnum, Rantum and Westerlander Campsites have RV pitches open year-round. It's rare for someone to actually pitch a tent on the wintry meadows, but you can comfortably brave the storms in a caravan – thanks in part to the shelter provided by hedges and trees.
