Lighthouses on Sylt

Overview of Sylt's lighthouses

The lighthouses on Sylt are striking landmarks of the island and some of them still play an important role in shipping today. Elbow in the north They characterise the coastal landscape all the way to the south of the island and offer impressive photo opportunities. 

The highest lighthouse is in Kampen, while the towers in List are the northernmost in Germany. The red and white lighthouse in Hörnum can even be visited.

List-East Lighthouse

The List-East Lighthouse, built in 1857 by the Danish government, is one of the two prominent lighthouses in the north of Sylt and the "little brother" of the List-West lighthouse. With its red and white stripes and its location in the middle of the dune landscape at Ellenbogen in List, it radiates maritime idyll. 

The oldest lighthouse The island still serves as Navigation in the North Sea and is a popular photo subject. However, it is not open to the public and cannot be visited.

List-West Lighthouse

The northernmost lighthouse in Germany

The List-West lighthouse, also built in 1857 by the Kingdom of Denmark, is the western counterpart to the List-Ost lighthouse and a characteristic landmark of the elbowWith its picturesque location, it blends harmoniously into the dune landscape. The List-West lighthouse has been providing guidance at sea for over 160 years. 

Even if a visit is not possible, the trip to Germany's northernmost lighthouse is worth it.

Kampen lighthouse

“Long Christian”

The black and white lighthouse "Langer Christian" stands in the south of Kampen. At the time when Sylt belonged to the Danish Kingdom, King Frederick VII of Denmark commissioned the construction of a lighthouse in 1855. Until 1953, the tower was yellow-grey, the color of the weathered clinker bricks. Only then did it receive its distinctive black and white color. First in operation in 1856 and is therefore the oldest lighthouse built by the Danes on Sylt. 

The "Lange Christian" is not accessible, but can be viewed from the outside and is a popular tourist destination.

Cross-mark lights
Kampen

The “little lighthouse”

The octagonal cross-mark lights Red Cliff stands at the northern end of the Red Cliff northwest of Kampen. The lighthouse is the earliest concrete tower on German coasts and was zwischen 1912 und 1913 built, but today can only be viewed from the outside. 
The octagonal tower was once an important landmark for navigation and a complement to the Kampen lighthouse. The Kampen lighthouse has been decommissioned since 1975.

Hörnum Lighthouse

The only walkable lighthouse on Sylt

The Hörnum lighthouse in the south of Sylt is not only an important landmark for sailors, but also a symbol of the island. Built in 1907, the red and white striped tower sits atop a dune and offers breathtaking views of the sea, the coastline, and the Wadden Sea. From 1914 to 1933, the lighthouse even housed the Hörnum school.
