BREAKFAST AND
BRUNCH ON SYLT

Start your day with enjoyment and energy and discover the most beautiful breakfast spots on the island of Sylt.

Text: Julia Petersen
For many, breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a special time to recharge. Some enjoy their morning coffee or roll in company, while others love having the early hours to themselves and need the peace and quiet before setting off. Whether together or alone, Sylt offers wonderful opportunities to start your island getaway energized. From waffles and eggs Benedict to salmon sandwiches, there are many creative and classic dishes and locations to suit every appetite.

The famous salmon sandwich

Two options, double the enjoyment

Something you'll encounter again and again on Sylt's breakfast menus is the famous "salmon sandwich." Here and there you'll find it served in the classic style on Frisian bread with horseradish and dill, sometimes also combined with eggs Benedict, in a crêpe, or even as focaccia. The salmon sandwich is a taste of the North Sea that's simply irresistible and always a good choice – from morning till night. And let's be honest: with a cappuccino and a view of the dunes, it tastes twice as good.

This is also true at Brød & Smør, the café at the station. Here, Nordic flair meets Danish culinary tradition. Besides homemade cinnamon rolls, you can enjoy savory and sweet smørrebrøds in the Brødbar. "And Friday is always fish day – we also add delicious herring to the bread."

The former bunker, which was transformed from an artist's studio into an artists' café in 1950, has always been a legendary spot for culinary delights and socializing. Today, you can enjoy breakfast at the Kupferkanne both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. Their cake creations are popular far beyond the island's dikes.

Sylt Crêpes
island-wide

How the crêpe came to Sylt is a matter of speculation. It was probably the Sylt surfers who discovered the French dish on their travels and brought it to Sylt.

Crêpes originally come from Brittany in northwestern France. They are paper-thin pancakes made from flour, eggs, milk, butter, and a pinch of salt. This specialty is now firmly established in Sylt's culinary tradition, and you can find them in almost every town from List to Hörnum. They are served either sweet, for example, the classic version with cinnamon and sugar, or savory, perhaps with feta cheese, walnuts, and arugula salad.

The great thing about crêpes is that they work wonderfully around the clock, from breakfast to dinner. And they taste best with a view of the sea.

Lund Sylt in Hörnum

Café, Restaurant & Bakery

LUND SYLT means: Sustainable island enjoyment with body and soul! If you had told Jens Lund about 15 years ago that his signature dish would one day be sourdough bread, he probably would have smiled and shaken his head slightly. This legendary bread, which is known and loved far beyond the island's borders (you can sometimes even find it order online) consists of genuine Sylt ingredients: The Sylt organic wheat flour comes from Kai Petersen from Keitum, for the flavor, about 10 percent is Sylt organic light grain rye from Organic farm Strawberry Paradise in Braderup Included. Of course, you'll also find it on the new breakfast menu, which was recently updated. As "Grilled Cheese," vegetarian, with and without a poached egg. In addition, there are "Syrniki" pancakes with honey and sour cream, Lund's spelt granola, delicious baked goods, and so much more!

Originally starting his apprenticeship with Jörg Müller in the classic world of exclusive Michelin-starred cuisine, Jens Lund, a culinary enthusiast from Hörnum, left the Sandknust after his training and moved to the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg. With great sensitivity and a thirst for knowledge, he worked his way up to the position of head pastry chef, until he felt he had reached a career milestone. His path then led him back to Sylt, where Jens enthusiastically and with many ideas joined his parents' pastry shop and adjoining restaurant. But somehow, the collaboration didn't feel quite right. Following the motto "gone for good," the island native packed up his belongings and, driven by wanderlust, headed for New Zealand. He had only intended to return home for a while, but then he met his wife Julia on Sylt and fell in love with both her and the island all over again. The second attempt to join the family business was successful, and now "Lund Sylt" delights with its own ice cream production, primarily organic ingredients, and a new menu concept, making a visit truly worthwhile. Quality over quantity, local and regional flavors with international influences characterize the style of this small family business in the south of the island.

The Berlin native and trained banker is now more than seasoned and knows the Sylt restaurant scene inside and out. The initial move from Berlin to the North Sea island of Sylt was nonetheless an interesting one. None other than Johannes King originally brought the couple to Sylt. "Who's crazy enough to do this?" Sansibar owner Herbert Seckler asked him at the time. "Do we really want to do this?" the couple philosophized over a bottle of wine on the Sansibar beach. Yes! The rest is a wonderful story. The fact that Johannes King and the Priewes now meet again at the Keitum roundabout and are even neighbors is a source of joy for everyone involved.

The Little Tea Room

Breakfast & Brunch

The Kleine Teestube (Little Tea Room) in Keitum has undergone a loving and modern makeover since the change of ownership. This was thanks to Cedric Horstmann, a native of Sylt who returned to the island from the big city. The breakfast menu is available until noon, and brunch is served all day long. From grilled cheese sandwiches and smoothie bowls to classic waffles, you're sure to find something you love. The Espresso Martini is also delicious!

Cheese Club in Keitum

For many, Keitum is the jewel of the island. Typically Frisian, typically Sylt. Traditional. Adorned with thatched-roof houses, stone walls, and pretty gardens. A significant part of Sylt's agriculture operates here, both in the middle and on the outskirts. Keitum is authentic and down-to-earth; here, everything seems to be in order. On the mudflats in the east of the island, surrounded by meadows and grazing horses. It's all the more refreshing when someone dares to step out of line, to do things differently. Perhaps even to offend.

With this courageous energy, Fabian Kolb and Johannes Philipson on 11 May 2024 in its first season as Cheese Club in KeitumMonths before, the two had been working hard, developing new skills, whether they wanted to or not, and getting to know each other all over again. The shop's creative name probably raises as many questions as it does cravings. Is there raving here after sunset? How do you get in? Do you have to be a member? The focus of the cheese club, which has found its home in the former Frisian cheese shop, is, first and foremost, cheese. Upon entering the building, diagonally across from the Keitum Teekontor and next to Georg's Galerie, this quickly becomes clear. The finest aromas waft from the counter and fill the shop...

"Many of our guests stop by on their way home with a cooler bag to take their favorite cheese home with them."
