On August 5th, the order was: open the door, everyone in – whoever comes, comes.

So uncomplicated, so open, so inviting. No big party, no select guests, just a natural flow. That's how the Mangelsens, the operators of the legendary BADEZEIT in Westerland, like it. After three years of waiting and eight months of construction, the gap in this special place was finally filled with new substance and architecture. The path to get there, as you can probably imagine, was an intensive undertaking. But today, that's no longer the focus; instead, it's about what has been newly created. "I don't want to travel back in time, but rather focus on the here and now, and we'll see what the future brings," Norbert Mangelsen says optimistically.

Unique view, familiar place

Since June 10, 1998, he has operated BADEZEIT on the Westerland Promenade, south of the Hotel Miramar. The view from the terrace is as unique as the location itself. What has been created here since construction began in 2024 still recalls its original design, yet is completely different. Deep blue walls, green velvet upholstery, brown leather chairs, woven lampshades, and light gray wood paneling give the new BADEZEIT a modern look.

Creative restart on the promenade

Around 75 people can find space here in various areas. Norbert Mangelsen let his creativity run wild with the interior design. Without any help – it's almost unbelievable. The interior is cleverly and tastefully coordinated. "Across the seasons. Because we're open every day from January to December. And it should be cozy in winter too," says the experienced restaurateur. In addition, significant upgrades and investments have been made: in patio umbrellas, the reservation system, order takers, and so on. The structure is still being refined and professionally optimized daily.

The BADEZEIT menu also enjoys a successful makeover. A few time-honored classics have been retired and replaced with new creations. In addition to vegan pasta and eggplant, there's a diverse culinary selection, from classic mussel pan to oven-roasted sea bass to Kiko corn-fed chicken with goat cheese, truffle honey, Mediterranean vegetables, and rosemary potatoes.

Terrace with Sylt flair

The fact that a good half of the BADEZEIT crew is back on board in the new era is a big hit with the boss. "Our two head chefs have been with us for 16 and 18 years, respectively, which we're delighted about, because it's all about the team. That's what Badezeit stands for, not a single person." Others moved to the mainland for love, started their own businesses, or had children. Everything is always on the move, as was the case on this Monday afternoon in the popular beach restaurant. The terrace, now slightly elevated, is well-filled with around 75 seats, and the weather is perfect for a relaxing time. A gentle summer breeze from the west blows around the house, the sun is shining, two surfers are riding a few small waves, and the Sylt beach scene is cheerfully showing off every facet of its scene. As if nothing had happened.
