History from Tinnum

On the paths of long forgotten times

Tinnum Castle

Surrounded by lush green meadows, the Tinnum Castle One of the town's main attractions. The ring-shaped rampart, with a diameter of 120 meters, is the last of three castles on Sylt. The Archsum Castle was destroyed, and the Rantum Castle was buried under the dunes. You can visit it anytime, 8 hours a day, have a picnic there, or lie on top at night and gaze at the stars. Although the Tinnum Castle is only 1 meters high, you still have a beautiful view of the surrounding area from the top. Excavations have unearthed ceramic pieces dating to the XNUMXst century AD, indicating a similar age to the Tinnum Castle. The rampart served various functions. It was probably originally a Germanic place of worship, which later provided the islanders with protection from the Vikings.

walking path
at Tinnum Castle

To the side of Tinnum Castle, you'll find a wooden walkway that leads you past the green ramparts to a gravel path. From there, you can reach the beach and Westerland. The surrounding area is ideal for a stroll, a dog walk, or a bike ride. You can also reach Keitum quickly and easily via the Tinnum meadows.

Old bailiwick

The old bailiwick is one of the oldest houses on the island. For over two centuries, this was the official residence of Sylt's royal administrative officials – the bailiffs. Until 1866, this house was the official center of the island of Sylt. Bailiff Peter Taken had the thatched-roof house, which still stands today, built in 1649 after the first bailiff's office in Tinnum had to be abandoned due to flooding. You'll find this typical Frisian house along the main street west of the community center.
