Experience Munkmarsch on Sylt…

From Keitum, you can walk across the Lies Bridge directly to the harbor and the exclusive 5-star Hotel Fährhaus Sylt. The fertile landscape near Munkmarsch belonged to a monastery in the Middle Ages. This is where the name Munkmarsch comes from, which translates as "monk's marsh." It was first mentioned in 1422 and belonged to Ribe Abbey. Today, you can take long walks through this expansive marsh landscape and enjoy the small beach and breathtaking nature at any time of year.

Munkmarsch Harbor

Sylt's former gateway to the world.
Even in the 19th century, before the railway embankment was opened in 1927, Munkmarsch was a hub of Sylt life. All tourists to the island had to arrive via Munkmarsch harbor. Back then, passengers traveled from the Danish port of Hoyer to Munkmarsch by steamship or ferry. From there, guests were transported to the popular seaside resorts by horse-drawn carriage or, later, by the island railway. Today, the former main port is a private marina, home to many of the islanders' boats. Idyllic beaches border the harbor, and opposite is the legendary Sylt Ferry House.

The Munkmarsch harbor combines tradition and modernity – the association preserves the maritime history and strengthens the community of the island of Sylt.

Bridge of Lies
in Munkmarsch

The small but imposing bridge between Keitum and Munkmarsch is the most beautiful bridge on the island. Simply because its location, with its direct proximity to the mudflats, is unique. From here, you have a wonderful view over the Sylt landscape and all the way to the harbor in Munkmarsch. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Morsum. How did the Bridge of Lies get its name? In the past, when the bridge was built much more unstable, parents would try to motivate their children to be honest with a trick (or rather a lie). They tried to convince them that the bridge would collapse if they told lies. Today, this magical spot is a popular tourist destination.
