Discover the green heart of the island

KEITUM

Keitum, the former capital of Sylt, is a living piece of island history. A place where old captain's houses in lovingly tended gardens tell you anecdotes from bygone times. Most of the houses you can discover throughout the village date back to the 18th century, when whaling was still the island's main source of income.

Keitum is so beautiful…

Keitum is a maze of small, idyllic alleys, surrounded by nature and the Wadden Sea. Just trust your gut, and your feet will naturally lead you to the most beautiful spots.

You'll find small boutiques and quaint tea rooms in old Frisian houses, a riding stable in the middle of the village, and a Sylt vineyard complete with a church.

  • Keitum is the Village for Sylt handicrafts: Here you can discover goldsmiths, glass art, pottery and so much more!

  • Keitum you can best discovered on foot, the streets are very winding and there are hardly any parking spaces. If you come by car, you will find a large parking area at the entrance to the town.

  • Agriculture is still very important in the original Keitum. Several riding stables offer horseback riding on the mudflats. Outside of town, you'll find meadows and pastures with Galloways, horses, and geese.

  • There are very beautiful guided tours through Keitum, through the mudflats and also through the Keitum vineyards. We recommend that you plan some time for Keitum.

  • The Keitum Church of St. Severin is one of the town's landmarks. It's very popular for weddings, baptisms, and even funerals. A visit is well worth it.

  • At Severin*s Resort & Spa, at Benen-Diken-Hof and at Day Spa Keitum you will find pure wellness!

  • Museums and Frisian houses: Let yourself drift through the place and immerse yourself in history.

Traditional ring riding

Every year in May, a Sylt tradition begins that is as bizarre as it is spectacular: Mounted on horseback, equipped with a lance, the riders attempt to impale a tiny brass ring dangling from a rope between two beams, the gallows. This is no niche sport on Sylt: Eight ring riding clubs with over 200 members operate on the island and hold their tournaments during the summer months. These tournaments, based in Archsum, Morsum, and Keitum, are always admired by large crowds.

Polo in Keitum

Polo, one of the most passionate sports, has also found its place in Keitum. Here, the fast-paced game on the back of graceful horses is passionately celebrated. The polo tournaments, which regularly take place on the manicured lawns surrounding the village, attract not only sports enthusiasts but also an international audience. In Keitum, you can experience the tactical skills of the players up close. There is also another polo event on the beach in Hörnum.
