Island towns on Sylt

12 places shape the face of Sylt

One island, five municipalities, and twelve towns. Each with its own unique charm: vibrant Westerland, sophisticated Kampen, and the green oases in the east of the island: Keitum, Morsum, Archsum, Tinnum, and Munkmarsch. Wenningstedt and Braderup, separated only by vast heathlands, Rantum between the seas, and the two harbor towns of List in the north and Hörnum in the south.

It is the many facets that make Sylt so distinctive…

RANTUM

In Rantum, you can let your gaze wander from the North Sea surf on the fine sandy west beach to the gentle waves of the Wadden Sea on the east side. In this small island town with its village charm, it's only a short walk from the mudflats to the North Sea surf: At the island's narrowest point, the Wadden Sea and the open sea are only about 600 meters apart.

MORSUM

In the east of the island of Sylt, the clocks probably tick a little differently. A little quieter, with less stress, surrounded by the Wadden Sea, always in tune with nature. Rural Morsum is the first village you see when traveling to Sylt by passenger or car train. Enchanted woods and wide fields, Frisian houses and farms characterize the landscape.

ARCHSUM

In the island's smallest village, you'll experience rural idyll and agricultural tradition. Here, you'll find plenty of space for sweeping views and long bike rides through salt marshes and along the dike. Horses and sheep graze in the wide meadows, and in spring, rapeseed fields glow in the most beautiful shades of yellow. Old farms sit enthroned on their mounds, and thatched Frisian houses dominate the townscape.

KEITUM

Keitum, the former capital of Sylt, is a living piece of island history. A place where old captain's houses in lovingly tended gardens tell you anecdotes from bygone times. Most of the houses you can discover throughout the village date back to the 18th century, when whaling was still the island's main source of income.

MUNKMARCH

The old ferry port, hikes, and Sylt delicacies are the hallmarks of your holiday in Munkmarsch. In addition to typical Frisian houses, you'll find the historic ferry port. Between the marshland and the Wadden Sea, walkers will especially enjoy the area around Munkmarsch.
