Spring on Sylt

In spring, Sylt offers mild temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, fresh North Sea air, and plenty of sunshine. The island feels clear, bathed in light, and pleasantly tranquil. The sea is roughly the same temperature as the air, but for the brave, a quick dip in the North Sea after a beach sauna is simply a must – invigorating and unforgettable.

In spring, one thing is particularly important on Sylt – the right mix. Layering is key – pack light sweaters, a windproof jacket, and ideally a water-repellent layer for the fresh North Sea breezes. Mornings and evenings can still be cool, while during the day you can often expect sunny, mild temperatures. For long walks on the beach, comfortable, waterproof shoes, sunglasses, and, depending on the weather, a light hat or scarf for wind protection are recommended.

Spring is perfect for long walks on the beach, bike rides on the 200km of cycle paths, or relaxing hours in cafés with sea views or in a sheltered beach chair. You can play golf, go horseback riding, enjoy the first days of water sports, or treat yourself to a soothing wellness break in the beach saunas.

In spring, Sylt reveals its tranquil side. Strolls through Keitum are particularly idyllic, where nature awakens in the gardens of the Frisian houses, and you can enjoy panoramic views across the Wadden Sea from the Green Cliff. On the west beach, you'll find clear spring light and pleasantly uncrowded beaches – perfect for long walks in the fresh North Sea air.

Depending on the weather, the beach chairs are usually set up around Easter, especially on the main beaches. With the first warm days, they once again become a typical feature of Sylt's beaches, inviting visitors to enjoy relaxing hours sheltered from the wind and with a sea view.

Restaurants, cafes, and shops will be open again as usual from Easter onwards. While some may still have limited opening hours during the off-season, the island is generally very well prepared for visitors. Shops are also permitted to open on almost all public holidays in spring.

Yes, the event calendar gradually fills up in spring. Look forward to culinary events, sporting events like the traditional Sylt Run in mid-March, cultural highlights, and the first club and party events that promise special evenings. A particularly extensive event program is offered at Easter and Pentecost.

Yes, spring is ideal for a holiday with a dog. The beaches are less crowded, many areas offer more space than in the high season, and long walks through the dunes and along the sea are particularly relaxing.

Important: From March 15th to October 31st Dogs must be kept on a leash and only within the designated dog beaches. Crossing other sections of the beach is prohibited. An exception applies to walks along the high-tide line: if you keep your dog on a leash and stay directly at the water's edge, you may walk with it on the beach even outside the designated dog beaches.

Numerous lambs are born on Sylt in the spring and around Easter. The lamb "Pulli," whose dark coloring resembled a sweater, even achieved nationwide fame in Germany. The best way to spot young lambs is a walk or bike ride along the Lister Ellenbogen peninsula or the dike, where the lambs graze and frolic freely on the salt marshes.

Popular places to spot lambs:

• At Lister Ellenbogen - Beware, these animals roam freely in the dunes and always have the right of way!
• At the Rantum Basin - Ideally as part of a bicycle tour around the Rantum basin
• On the dike between Tinnum and Morsum - An asphalt path runs along the entire dike line between the dike and the Wadden Sea.

The cherry blossoms on Sylt usually bloom in April. Depending on the weather, the cherry trees begin to blossom in early or mid-April. The most beautiful spots to experience the cherry blossoms on Sylt are:

• Along the railway line at the historic Old Post Office building in Westerland
• During a walk through the captain's village of Keitum
• Along the Fischerweg trail at the Südwäldchen in Westerland

In spring you can often find attractive packages, Easter specials, or special rates outside of peak season. The selection of accommodations is also often larger.
