Nomads of our time.

Migrant sheep farms in Schleswig-Holstein

Wandering day in and day out, enduring all weathers, relishing solitude – itinerant shepherds need idealism and tenacity to practice their ancient profession in a highly mechanized agricultural world and survive in the market. European agricultural policy and its implementation in Germany have meant that sheep farms have been draining their assets for years. Without agricultural subsidies, the farms are largely operating at a loss. Business succession is often at risk; around 50 itinerant shepherds nationwide cease operations every year.

The last 4 migratory sheep farms in Germany

Photographer Holger Rüdel from Selk has created an impressive portrait of this dying craft in his photo report "Nomads of our time. Travelling sheep farms in Schleswig-Holstein". Like no other chronicler before him, Rüdel has documented the hard work of the last four travelling sheep farms in Schleswig-Holstein. He followed them on their journey through moors and heaths, through villages and along roads from the Schlei to Sylt. "In doing so, I rediscovered Schleswig-Holstein for myself - and perhaps also for all viewers of my pictures," says Rüdel.

Seventy-five photographs document the daily challenges of the lives of the "nomads of our time," the last migratory shepherds in Schleswig-Holstein. The images portrayed the Bärenshöft sheep farm, the Fjordland sheep farm, the Transhumanz sheep farm, and the Aukrug sheep farm. From these 75 prints, museum director Alexander Römer selected a selection of the prints, which will be on display from February 75th during opening hours. The entire project can be discovered in the accompanying volume of the same name.

The special exhibition "Nomads of Our Time. Wandering Sheep Farms in Schleswig-Holstein" will be on view at the Sylt Museum in Keitum from February 13 to July 20, 2025. Further information, opening hours, and admission prices Is there ... here.
