The island towns of Sylt have steadily improved their offerings for travelers with disabilities in recent years. And to ensure that the wide sandy beach is not an obstacle but a pleasure, there are beach wheelchairs available for loan. Arrival without obstacles

Your relaxed journey to Sylt with a handicap

  • Car train
    The DB SyltShuttle or the RDC Autozug Sylt will take you from Niebüll across the railway embankment to the island. You'll stay in your vehicle for the entire 40-minute crossing.

  • passenger train
    There are direct intercity connections from various German cities to Westerland. Deutsche Bahn also operates regional services between Sylt and the mainland. If you need assistance boarding or disembarking, please let us know before your trip. The Deutsche Bahn service team will be happy to assist you on-site.

    Tip: Deutsche Bahn offers a luggage service to the island.

  • Ferry
    The crossing from Havneby on Rømø to List on Sylt takes approximately 40 minutes. Guests with disabilities are requested to register at the ticket counter. Spacious parking spaces are available, and the lounge area is easily accessible by elevator.

  • Airplane
    There are various direct and connecting flights to the island of Sylt. Sylt Airport staff will be happy to assist you with disembarkation and the journey to the arrivals terminal. There is a wheelchair-accessible restroom in the airport building. Please indicate your disability when booking your flight.

    All buses operated by the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft are low-floor buses and can be used by wheelchair users.

  • Wheelchair-accessible taxis on Sylt

    The United Sylt Radio Taxi Center offers a mobile ramp (no transport of electric wheelchairs). Taxis with a ramp are available; please reserve one day in advance.

  • Velotaxi
    The highlight: Let yourself be inspired by the Velotaxi Drive across the island. In a modern, high-tech rickshaw, you'll experience the island from a new perspective. A pleasant chat with your driver is included for free. You can book both fixed and customized tours and routes.

  • Bike rental
    The bike rentals VeloQuick and MM offer tandems, electric bikes and tricycles.

  • Sylt car rentals

Accessible 
beach experience on Sylt

Sylt offers a variety of options for enjoying the beach to the fullest, even with mobility restrictions. Thanks to the appropriate infrastructure and special offers, you can experience the North Sea in a barrier-free and comfortable way.

In many places on Sylt barrier-free beach access for a comfortable and safe route across the dunes to the sea. Wide paths with a gentle incline make the beach accessible with a wheelchair, walker, or stroller.

For a stay directly on the water, there are special beach wheelchairs These are equipped with extra-wide tires and allow for easy movement on sand. Use is usually free, but advance reservation is recommended.

A special highlight is the CadWeazle: an electrically powered outdoor wheelchair specifically designed for off-road use, including on the beach. The CadWeazle can be rented at select locations and allows users to move independently on the beach—even right down to the water's edge.

On some promenades beach chairs These beach chairs are accessible via level access. These beach chairs offer protection from wind and sun and let you experience the typical Sylt feeling with a sea view.

Beach and swimming wheelchairs

Street, beach and swimming wheelchairs are available free of charge at the following beach crossings and tourism services during the season.

  • The match: At beach crossing no. 29 “Balaclava” A beach wheelchair is available free of charge. Information: At the control booth (pre-registration required)
  • Westerland: At the beach entrance “Bath time” A beach wheelchair and several accessible beach chairs are available. These can be reserved in advance. Information: Lifeguard Stand 4.40 (Tel. 0160 93306844) in season daily from 10:30 am – 17:00 pm
  • Westerland: At the beach crossing near the restaurant “Distress at Sea” A beach wheelchair is available. Information: Guest card inspector at the beach crossing or lifeguard stand 4.25 (Tel. 0151 27615173) in season daily from 10:30 am to 17:00 pm.
  • Rantum: In Rantum, two beach wheelchairs can be rented by prior appointment. Information: Rantum depot (Tel. 0160 90754315, registration by telephone necessary)
  • Hörnum: It is possible to rent a street wheelchair, information: Hörnum Tourist Service (Tel. 04651 96260).

Take the Cadweazle to the beach 

There are five cadWeazle at the Tourism Service Wenningstedt-Braderup, two cadWeazle at the Island of Sylt Tourism Service in Westerland and a cadWeazle at the Tourism Service Hörnum is available for storage, management and analysis.
