Hiking on Sylt

Between dunes, beach & Wadden Sea - hiking on Sylt at its best

Hiking on Sylt means pure nature: Explore miles of sandy beaches, picturesque dune landscapes, and the unique UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea. The island offers a variety of hiking trails suitable for every pace and ability. Whether it's relaxing strolls along the coast, challenging tours through the Braderup Heath, or romantic sunset strolls on the west beach – Sylt invites you to unwind and be active at the same time. Numerous viewpoints reward you with unforgettable panoramas of the sea and landscape.

Hiking on Sylt is more than just exercise – it is an experience for all the senses.
Your perfect island hiking day

A hike or a walk through the Sylt nature is always an experience. Because Sylt offers countless paths and opportunities to explore them. Your perfect hiking day could start at the tide line and lead you either north or south with the soothing sea air. Are you looking for the tranquility of secluded beaches? Then follow the light signals of the Lister Lighthouses, which are located at the Elbow - a nature reserve in the very north of the island. And also the hike around the Hörnum Odde in the south of the island is under the protection of a red and white giant.
A hike through the nature reserve in the east of the island encompasses the ten million year old Morsum Cliff. Another highlight is the Braderup Heath, which is bathed in warm light by the sun, especially in the early morning. Where will it draw you?

  • 1. Check the weather app: As we all know, there is no such thing as bad weather ;-)

  • 2. Choose a route: Which place don’t you know yet?

  • 3. Pack provisions and something to drink. Restaurants and the like are available along the way. It's best to pick a place beforehand.

  • 4. You can either walk directly from your accommodation or take the SVG bus to a designated starting point. You can also do this by bike or car, of course.

  • 5. And off we go! Enjoy nature, breathe deeply, and unwind.

mudflat hikes

Experience the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea

A particularly fascinating and precious habitat is the Wadden Sea, which stretches from Hörnum to List along Sylt's east coast. It's best to take a tour through the mudflats with an expert guide. What might not be apparent at first glance is that this unique landscape presents some pitfalls and dangers. Guided mudflat hikes are regularly offered during the season by the tourism services, nature conservation organizations, and the Natural Forces Experience Center.

Sylt Whale Path hiking trail

To protect the false whales

The whale sanctuary, the first of its kind in Europe, has existed off the west coast of the island of Sylt since 1999. The resulting Sylt Whale Trail can be found along the west beach: 22 interactive information panels provide fascinating and interesting information about porpoises and their precious habitat, as well as the importance of protecting it. A highlight of the Whale Trail is the opportunity to observe porpoises from the beach when the sea is calm.
