Cycling on Sylt: An overview

Children's bikes: 4 - 7 € / per day (depending on the bike size)

On Sylt, you can choose from over 30 bike rentals. You can rent a bike in almost every town. Therefore, the risk of not being able to find a bike is relatively low.

The cycle paths on Sylt stretch over 200 km. This means you have an incredible number of opportunities to explore the island and its natural beauty all year round. In the off-season, you have especially plenty of space because there's less traffic on the paths. 

Yes, all places on Sylt are easily accessible by bike. There are hardly any inclines, but the wind can sometimes make you sweat. An e-bike is a convenient solution!

Taking bicycles on regional trains

Taking your bike on the regional train to Sylt is possible, subject to space availability. Passenger volumes regularly increase during the summer months. We therefore recommend avoiding trains from Westerland/Sylt during rush hour between 14 p.m. and 18 p.m. and using the trains before and after. Strollers and wheelchairs generally have priority. To take your bike, you need a bicycle day ticket in addition to your ticket.

Taking bicycles on InterCity trains

Bicycle spaces are limited on the daily IC connections to Sylt. Therefore, in addition to the bicycle ticket, you will need a bicycle reservation, which must be made at the Deutsche Bahn travel center or online no later than one day before departure.

SyltShuttle Plus

Bicycle spaces are available on the Sylt Shuttle Plus trains from/to Bredstedt or Husum. The ticket “Island special” includes the journey for one person and the carriage of one bicycle.

luggage service

Alternatively, you can also send your bike using the Deutsche Bahn luggage service. The Hermes door-to-door service also offers convenient transport for bicycles. The bike will be picked up and delivered directly to Sylt. >> More information at bahn.de/gepaeck

Taking bicycles on the Sylt ferry

You can take your bike on the Sylt ferry without any problems – both on your car's bike rack and as a cyclist without a car. A bike rack with a total length of up to 6,00 m can be mounted on the back of your car and a total height of up to 4,80 m on the roof at no extra charge. As a pedestrian, you pay a small surcharge for your bike.

Station

There are various bike rental shops located in the immediate vicinity of Westerland train station. You can also book your rental bike online in advance.

Tip: At the mietrad Sylt rental station directly opposite the station forecourt in Westerland, you will receive a discount on your rental bike by showing a Deutsche Bahn ticket valid for the day in question: 1 euro discount for regular bikes and 2 euros discount for e-bikes.

Can I take my (rental) bike on the bus?

Yes, all buses on Sylt are equipped with bike racks for up to five bikes. Transporting a bike costs the same as an adult ticket. Please note: E-bikes with batteries attached to the frame cannot be transported if the frame is wider than 7 cm in the mounting area.

Here's how it works: First, inform the bus driver, then place your bike on the bike rack yourself and secure it with the provided brackets, then get on and buy a ticket.

Is it possible to take a bicycle in a taxi?

The Henke taxi service (04651/66 99) will also transport your bicycles if possible.
