Sylt's viewing platforms, simply by virtue of their elevated position, are true highlights for experiencing the sunset. Before you stretches nothing but vastness, an unobstructed view to the west, and the North Sea where the sun slowly disappears on the horizon. Sometimes, that's all you need – the pure luxury of life and a unique feeling of freedom. And the best part: on some of the viewing platforms, you have a good chance of enjoying this moment in complete peace and quiet. So just stop, let your gaze wander, take a few photos to remember it by, or leave your phone in your pocket and simply watch as the sky slowly transforms into a breathtaking display of colors. Immerse yourself in the golden light

Anyone who's ever experienced a sunset while surfing knows that truly special feeling. You want to hold onto the moment forever, when the low sun makes the sea sparkle and it feels like you're bathing in golden light. On Sylt, you can, of course, experience this quite literally, whether swimming in the North Sea or surfing. For a more tranquil experience, glide towards the sunset on a stand-up paddleboard. As everyone knows, Sylt is all about enjoyment. And you could almost believe that food and drinks taste even better when you're not only gazing at the North Sea, but also letting the setting sun bathe your table in a warm glow. Along the west beach, there are several restaurants and beach bistros that are perfect for just such moments. Here, the sunset is celebrated in style. Sometimes it's a relaxed affair with a glass of wine and good food, other times it's filled with music and a lively atmosphere. Add to that the view of the sea, perhaps still sandy feet, and a sky that changes from minute to minute. What more could you really need for a truly perfect Sylt evening?

The lighthouses of the island

They are true Sylt models. While their poses may be rather simple and inflexible, they shine with stamina and stability, looking pretty good from almost any angle. You can rely on them in all kinds of weather, and when the golden light of the setting sun comes into play, the photo opportunity is perfect. Four lighthouses and a cross-range light are waiting to be photographed on Sylt. It's especially beautiful around sunset when the last rays of sunlight bathe the towers and the surrounding dunes in warm light. So have your camera or smartphone ready and feel free to experiment a bit with perspective, light, and distance. Your models certainly won't run away.

Sunset for your ears

Beach sauna

In Sylt's beach saunas, you're already incredibly close to nature. Here you can hear the waves, feel the wind on your skin, take a refreshing dip in the North Sea, and consciously merge with nature and its elements. As the sun slowly sets towards the horizon, this special place becomes even more magical. After your sauna session, you can relax in a beach chair and soak up the last warm light of the day. Mindfully, calmly, and without distractions. A sunset where you really only have to do one thing: be present and enjoy. You can experience a total of three beach saunas on Sylt.

Events

The Sylt Surf Cups are a sure bet for spectacular sunsets. Around the promenade, deck chairs and seating areas nestled among food stalls, small booths, and tents invite you to linger a little longer. Enjoy a cool drink, music in your ears, and perhaps strike up a conversation with other visitors as the sun slowly dips below the horizon towards the North Sea. Speaking of music: it also plays a major role at the Wenningstedt Cliff Sounds and the sundowner events in the bandstand. DJs provide the perfect soundtrack to the evening sky, transforming this daily natural spectacle into a small, communal event. Dancing, listening, raising a glass, or simply gazing at the sea – anything is possible.

When the first rays of sunshine hit the island

Tips for Early Risers

The sunrise over the Wadden Sea on Sylt can easily rival its evening counterpart. However, things are usually a bit quieter in the early morning. As the island slowly awakens, the early birds often share the first golden rays of sunshine only with a few runners, dog walkers, and perhaps a sheep or two. The morning atmosphere is particularly beautiful in the meadows of Tinnum and Keitum, in the Braderup Heath, at the Morsum Cliff or Ellenbogen, and at Sylt's harbors. Especially in the cooler months, it can become almost mystical when a gentle mist hovers over the grasses and the first rays of sunlight make the dew sparkle. So getting up early is definitely worth it, and that first cup of coffee tastes twice as good afterward. You can find the best breakfast spots on Sylt here:
